Crail Golfing Society
From Peter Craigon, Wed 25 March 2020
Hi Everyone
As the situation we find ourselves in currently is such a challenge for
people everywhere I thought it may be nice for golfers to think to the
future a little when we are all back golfing once more. We have been
extremely lucky over the years to welcome golfers from all over the world to
play golf in Scotland and I'd like to share a few of my own experiences of
playing on some of the finest courses in the world. I am of course a little
biased (and also quite old) - having played golf in Scotland for well over
50 years. If you have time please do send me a reply to share some of your
experiences of playing on our great golf courses. Below I have detailed
some thoughts and images of the Crail Golfing Society.
On a recent small golf trip with my longstanding golfing friends we played
the wonderful Crail Craighead and Balcomie Links courses. This truly is
links golf at it's very best! Crail Golfing Society is in fact one of the
oldest clubs in the world being formed in 1786. The experience for all
golfers provided by the club is superb and I'd highly recommend anyone to
visit to play on one or both of these excellent links golf courses. Located
only 11 miles from St Andrews both courses have holes which are very close
to the sea and the view from the clubhouse in absolutely stunning - you can
see from one of the images above a beautiful rainbow hovering around the
last 4 holes of the Balcomie Links and each of these holes is in full view
from the lounge window. If any of you would like to read an excellent golf
story I recommend the book "In Search of Burningbush" by Michael Konik. I
make mention of this here as the story takes places on a fabled old Scottish
golf links called Burningbush - no doubt in my mind the author based parts
of the golf course around the 13th and 14th holes on the Balcomie Links and
also features the cave which is located between the 14th green and 15th tee.
You will have a ball if and when you play at the Crail Golfing Society.
