Crafting Your Ideal Career: It's About Who You Become

Crafting Your Ideal Career: It's About Who You Become

In today's professional world, securing the ideal job isn’t just about having the right resume or applying to countless positions.

Trust me - that doesn't work.

I see it every day.

Just yesterday I had a Strategy Call with someone that has done more than 500 applications.

Burning through "leads" and their self-esteem.

It ain't free.

Time and again that true career success hinges on a transformative principle:

"It’s not what you have to do; it’s who you have to become."

Please post that on your wall!

So here's how you do it:

Reframing Your Job Search Mindset

Here's the common misconceptions that many job seekers hold.

The traditional approach focuses heavily on resumes and applications, but this only scratches the surface.

The real question you should be asking yourself is: who do you need to become to land your dream job?

Traits of an Ideal Job

When clients come to me seeking their dream job, the first exercise we undertake is defining what that ideal job looks like.

It's not just about the job title or the company name;

it's about the environment,

the culture,

and the opportunities for growth.

Here are some key attributes that consistently come up in these discussions:

1. Remote or Hybrid Work: Many people now prioritize the flexibility of working remotely or in a hybrid model.

The thing is that remote and hybrid jobs come from cultures that understand what it's like to (for example) be a parent.

You have to read between the lines. Companies' actions speak about their cultures.

2. High Retention Rate: An ideal workplace often has a high employee retention rate, indicating a positive work culture and satisfied employees.

Clients when they start working with us, never look at that.

I learned that from an HR client we helped land a Director role.

3. Trust and Autonomy: Being trusted to work independently and utilize your expertise without micromanagement is a significant factor.

This empowerment leads to greater job satisfaction and productivity.

How can you know about this? By talking to people inside the company.

4. Human-Centric Culture: Organizations that focus on their employees as human beings, rather than just cogs in a machine, foster a more engaging and supportive work environment.

Again. How can you know about this? By talking to people inside the company.

Or people that left too!

5. Agile and Adaptable: In a rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt and be agile is crucial.

An ideal job allows for this flexibility, ensuring that goals are met. That you grow. That both the employee and the organization can thrive in any situation.

6. Dynamic and Challenging Work: Jobs that offer dynamic, challenging tasks keep employees motivated and engaged.

Most candidates don't go to a job solely because of compensation. They want to be inspired!

This constant growth and learning environment is essential for long-term satisfaction.

Growth and Development

Growth is a multifaceted concept in the context of career development.

It's not just about climbing the corporate ladder; it's about growing technically, systematically, and experientially.

  • Technical Growth: Staying abreast of new technologies and advancements in your field.
  • Systematic Growth: Understanding and improving processes and systems within your organization.
  • Experiential Growth: Gaining valuable experiences from unique projects and challenges, such as mergers, acquisitions, and significant organizational changes.

Leadership and Balance

The ideal job also involves leadership that is genuinely invested in your growth.

Leaders who are passionate about what they do will naturally mentor and support their teams.

Your job is to actually be able to identify what that leadership looks like, feels like, talks like.

When you're in these conversations, you'll be able to identify what a balanced work environment looks like. Crucial in an ideal setting.

A balanced environment is where there's a healthy mix of fast-paced and slow-paced activities, and a balance between masculine and feminine leadership qualities.

On Last Thing - Work-Life Balance

The notion of work-life balance often gets misunderstood.

It's not about segregating work and life but integrating them in a way that supports a sustainable and fulfilling career.

True balance is achieved when your work complements your life.

So.

The journey to your ideal job is more than a checklist of qualifications and applications. It's a transformative process of becoming the person who naturally fits into that role.

Fantastic points Gonzalo Hurtado, MBA, MSc. I would add, if you know what your ideal job looks like and you're absolutely clear about the boxes that need to be ticked, then you're ready....ready to take a good hard look at yourself and question - what have I got to offer that will put me in that role? How can I stand out and be right for such a position within such a Co? What am I doing right now to make that happen? Often people look at others and think they're so lucky to have such a great job but rarely ask them about the journey they took to get it. The world is big but your relevant contact pool is small. Go connecting in that pool. Make yourself known, attractive and you may just find that ideal job comes to you ?? (I'm a headhunter, I most definitely know this works!!!)

It’s amazing how much more effective targeting the right roles can be compared to mass applications. Thanks for addressing this, Gonzalo!
