A lot of experts have a lot of different views on what leadership qualities are most important. However, there is one quality that everyone remains in consensus on — every effective leader must possess compassion. Indispensably, compassion must be the crux of any leadership strategy that wants to take the win.
One of the most admired qualities in a leader, compassion is the capacity to comprehend and relate to another's feelings, as well as the ability to convey and demonstrate that you are willing to help the other person no matter what they may be experiencing and dealing with. In order to be a leader who is both approachable and accessible, it's vital to have compassion on your side. The good news: becoming a compassionate leader is within reach for those who put the time and effort in.
Every action, no matter how tiny or insignificant, has a significant range of influence. Compassion can also be nurtured starting with a few nice words and thoughtful actions. The following are the first five steps you can take.
Start by Getting to Know Your Team Better
All too often, our contributions to the conversations we have are self-congratulatory or boastful. As an ice breaker, "I" isn't a very valuable tool for an empathetic and compassionate leader. In order to cultivate compassion, leaders must shift focus from their selves to others. Here, leaders who already place a high value on the contributions of others have an advantage in this regard. They are better equipped to nurture other leaders when they move beyond the sphere of the self.
Let Employees Know How Much You Appreciate Their Efforts
It's natural to want to be recognised for our hard work and to feel like we're making a difference in the places where we work. So, naturally, when leaders express gratitude and appreciation to their employees, they are rewarded with their confidence, admiration, and commitment. Employees appreciate it when their leaders acknowledge them, and this results in amazing things being accomplished by the organization.
Leaders can also express concern for employees’ growth and efforts by moving beyond words, and extending material support and providing resources, mentorship, or professional guidance.

Be a Link in the Chain of Relationships amongst Your Employees
In order to be a compassionate leader, one must seek to build relationships rather than authority. Instead of dictating, they must motivate. They must make a safe space for employees. When you are compassionate towards them, employees stop seeing you as a superior who only gives daily orders and demands that people follow them. Instead, you become a part of the team, someone who not only looks ahead but also looks behind at the people, the humans who make it all happen.
Remember that people collaborate more effectively and generate better overall outcomes when they are working together. Take advantage of possibilities for healthy cooperation to show your commitment to this principle. Enhance the culture of collaboration among employees and you will notice that there’s less burnout, more trust, and improved interpersonal interactions – all surreptitiously driving the change that organizations need.
After all, it's not a coincidence that organisations that have strong leadership are also those where people can freely exchange ideas and come up with innovative solutions.
Know that your ability to impact others extends well beyond the workplace
Studies have found a relationship between having a strict supervisor and cardiac issues among employees. As long as 55% of employees don't think their organisations care about them, it's hard to disagree that a lack of compassion in the workplace is causing the current health care emergency.
People's lives are affected by how you lead. Therefore, you, as a leader, have a responsibility to do good while minimising harm. Provide resources to assist people lead healthy lifestyles, while establishing caring workplaces in which team members have the opportunity to grow and learn. Research reveals that the most potent method in which leaders may promote employee wellbeing is not via programmes and initiatives but through day-to-day activities.
Lead by example
Leaders can instil love, adaptability, support, and empowerment in others. But to instil these qualities, you need to, first, cultivate these qualities yourself. If you can cultivate a good mental attitude and be the type of leader that always has something compassionate to say, employees will also feel comfortable approaching you with any problems or difficulties that develop throughout projects or teams. It’s important to note here that “compassionate” does not mean “nice”, it means giving people what they need at the moment, even if it may sound harsh to their ears at first.
On many levels, a successful leadership strategy involves demonstrating love and care for those around you. So, as you plan for the future, consider how you might show your co-workers how much you value, respect, and care about them. All you need to invest is your time, energy and attention.
This is a fabulous note on team building and leadership. A must read for every budding manager .
