Crafting Spaces, Telling Stories
At Blueline, storytelling involves much more than just the narrative itself. It's about creating the right environment for each story, blending innovation, adaptability, and teamwork. This approach ensures every project goes beyond simple storytelling, engaging the audience so that each narrative is genuine and compelling.
The environment plays a pivotal role in our storytelling, acting as an integral character in the background. This month, we want to share how we build these engaging scenes, emphasizing our commitment to designing immersive spaces that truly reflect each narrative's core. Through our ongoing work, including projects with clients like HackerOne, led by Co-Creative Directors Matt Rice and Grace Newlin, we're challenged to design settings that amplify the story we're conveying.
The Process Behind the Scenes
Embarking on this creative journey requires more than just technical skill; it demands an understanding of the narrative we're bringing to life. The "cat whiskers" setup, for instance, was born from the desire to visually represent the dual nature of hackers—shadowed yet significant. This idea evolved through a collaborative effort, where Matt Dillman, Director of Photography, and team members Tucker Gragg, Ben Frazier and Andrew Torbenson, pooled their expertise to craft a setup that was both meaningful and visually compelling.
Finding Inspiration in Every Story Each project begins with an exploration of its thematic core, diving into the stories we aim to tell. Our work with clients like HackerOne introduces us to realms filled with complexity and nuance, such as the intricate world of cybersecurity and ethical hacking. Drawing inspiration from this, we aim to create spaces that reflect the narrative’s depth—balancing technical sophistication with the intrigue of the digital world.
Our creative process is influenced by diverse sources, from the futuristic landscapes of video games to the symbolic depth of digital guardianship found in science fiction. These inspirations help us envision environments that not only serve as backdrops but actively contribute to the storytelling, enhancing the narrative’s impact.

Crafting Environments Around Our Shoots A significant aspect of our environmental design involves integrating the unique features of our shooting locations. This approach allows us to extend the storytelling beyond the immediate interview setup, utilizing the surrounding elements to enrich the narrative. For instance, setting up interviews near iconic locations or incorporating the vibrant life of a carousel ride into our shots provides a dynamic, engaging context that elevates the story.
Forward with Stories That Matter As we continue to collaborate with clients like HackerOne, our commitment to crafting spaces that tell meaningful stories remains at the core of what we do. Each project is an opportunity to explore new dimensions of storytelling, celebrating the individuals and missions that shape our digital world.
