I'm not sure I've done an elevator pitch in an actual elevator. But I've done plenty of elevator pitches in other places.
You're at a party and someone asks, "So what do you do?" Or you meet someone at the club, or at a networking event, or on a date, and they say, "Tell me about yourself."
Time for your elevator pitch.
Whether it's for your company, your project, or yourself, an elevator pitch takes a messy, complicated story and distills it into a tight 30- to 60-second soundbite: short enough to pitch someone in the elevator ride down.
The problem is, there's never a good time to work on your elevator pitch. Then, when you need it, it's too late: the Very Important Person is staring at you, as you mumble through a bunch of technical jargon and disconnected thoughts.
