FUNDING POINT – CRAFTING AN OFFER – RECAP
?The crafting of the investment offering may be the most important activity that will lead to a successful funding campaign.
?The most important thing in crafting an offer is to know the investor candidate. A well designed offer may be described as a mirror image of the investor candidate. It reflects what they need, what they want, and what they care about.
?An investment offer that talks only about the business making the offer is often dead on arrival. Any investor candidate looking at such an offer sees someone who can only think about themselves. Someone who is self-centered does not create trust and is not a good place to put their money at risk.
?As much as it may seem hypocritical, investor candidates want to see offers that only talk about them. He who has the gold makes the rules. It may only seem fair in that it's their money.
?I see offers all the time that tell the very simple story of the potential of making a rich person richer. The pitch assumes that this potential is addressing the investor candidate with the message they want to hear. However, all investors expect to make money on any opportunity in which they invest. This is a given. But it is not enough. An investment offer that talks only to a return on investment is a commodity. It looks like everyone else’s offer with nothing to distinguish it.
?An offer that is crafted to match the investor candidate will stand out. It will gain the attention of the investor candidate. Realistically, it may still not get the job done, but like they say in the Olympics, it’s better to get a chance to compete.
?Understanding investor candidates is like understanding customers. Any assumption made about who they are and what they will buy without getting their input is taking an unneeded risk. The likely outcome will be an offer that misses the mark, resulting in a waste of time and money.
?Even simple, standard types of offers to common sources of funding may be enhanced.
SUCCESSFUL FUNDING
On Tuesday, at the Successful Funding?show, Ron Yeager was my guest again, and we discussed the mindset of investors. Ron’s career, which includes being an investor, an opportunity scout, an entrepreneur, and a problem solver, gives him a big perspective on what investor candidates think when they see an opportunity.
