The Shift to Skills-Based Hiring

The global workforce is undergoing a transformation, driven by rapid technological advancements and changing industry demands. Employers are recognizing that specific skills and experiences often outweigh formal educational qualifications in determining a candidate's ability to excel in a role. According to a recent report by LinkedIn, 69% of hiring managers agree that skills-based hiring is critical in today’s recruitment environment.

?

Key Statistics:

  • Global Perspective: LinkedIn’s 2023 Workplace Learning Report found that 75% of Learning & Development professionals believe skill-based hiring will be a major focus for recruitment strategies over the next five years.
  • South African Context: A survey conducted by PwC in South Africa highlighted that 63% of employers are shifting their hiring practices to focus on candidates’ skills rather than their academic backgrounds.

Why Skills Matter More Than Ever

  1. Technological Disruption: The pace of technological change means that the skills needed in many industries are evolving faster than formal education can keep up. For example in South Africa, we’ve seen industries like IT, digital marketing, and data analytics now prioritize specific technical skills over formal degrees. According to the World Economic Forum, by 2025, 50% of all employees will need reskilling due to technological advances.
  2. Adaptability and Lifelong Learning: In an era where industries are constantly evolving, the ability to learn new skills and adapt to changes is more valuable than ever. Employers are increasingly seeking candidates who demonstrate a commitment to learning agility and the ability to pivot as required by industry changes. Companies like psychometric assessment partner - Omnicor, a leader in providing talent management and assessment solutions, emphasize the importance of adaptability in their candidate assessment methodologies. Omnicor’s tools and platforms are designed to help organisations identify and nurture these traits in candidates, ensuring that they not only meet current demands but also grow with the company as new challenges arise.
  3. Diverse Talent Pools: By focusing on skills, companies can tap into a more diverse talent pool. This approach not only helps in overcoming the talent shortages seen in many sectors but also supports diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives by considering candidates from varied backgrounds who may have acquired skills through non-traditional pathways.

Hi, I truly support this concept given the rapid pace of technological advancement, how can someone with qualifications from 10 to 20 years ago continue to add value to a company? As the tech landscape evolves swiftly, it's essential for candidates to show their current relevance and potential from the outset. Consequently, up-to-date technical skills and relevant experience have become critical factors in choosing the right staff. Additionally, the ability to integrate and leverage AI to complement the role is increasingly a decisive factor in the final selection.

If someone was afforded an opportunity to gain a skill without qualifications it must not be difficult to afford the same with someone with qualifications. It is only in few areas where someone with only a skill can do work which someone with qualifications only cannot do if there is such. That assumption that people with qualifications have no skills need to be tested also. I don't believe it carries much weight. One day I would like to see an interpreter without qualifications becoming a presiding officer because those people end up having the skills required to be in the environment to support this subject matter. Honestly speaking I don't like the idea that skill is more important than qualifications because it encourages people to consider working before qualifications and at the same time is not easy to find work without qualifications even though you might have the skill.

That's very true
