Crafting a Future-Ready Organization: Marrying Maturity Models with Enterprise Agility

Crafting a Future-Ready Organization: Marrying Maturity Models with Enterprise Agility

As a change leader, I’m often asked how organizations can integrate the Enterprise Agility ecosystem with their existing agile maturity models and metrics. While Enterprise Agility offers a comprehensive approach called Sustainability Zones , it’s understandable many companies want to evolve from familiar frameworks.

I recently supported an organization that took a “hybrid model” approach, blending their legacy practices with Enterprise Agility. Here’s how we made it work:

First, I introduced the leadership team to Enterprise Agility’s Three Universal Outcomes? —?Always Ready, Always Responsive, and Always Innovative. These outcomes provide future-oriented key performance indicators that gauge an organization’s adaptability, resilience, and ability to thrive in volatile markets. The team recognized the value but wasn’t ready to overhaul their current maturity level system.

So we designed a bridge. We mapped their traditional process-focused maturity levels to Enterprise Agility outcomes. We know that many agile companies are in the same situation and want to measure agile maturity using different approaches (from SAFe models to others). In these cases, we recommend a hybrid approach. And this is where the three universal outcomes can be shaped in a way that support people and their existing approaches:

  • Readiness metrics (Always Ready): these metrics assess the organization’s ability to anticipate and prepare for market changes. They may include metrics such as speed of evaluating a situation to market demands, quality of decisions, ability to adapt to new technologies, or agility in decision-making.
  • Responsiveness metrics (Always Responsive): These metrics assess the organization’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to customer needs and demands. They may include metrics such as product or service delivery time, customer satisfaction, or responsiveness to changes in market preferences.
  • Innovation metrics (Always Innovative): These metrics evaluate the organization’s ability to generate new ideas, products or services that drive growth and competitive advantage. They may include metrics such as the number of innovative ideas or products implemented, the impact of innovation on financial results or the ability to adapt to market trends, how well prepared they are for the future (+18 months), etc.

Beyond just outcomes, we also incorporated the 5 Dimensions of Agility ?—?Technical, Structural, Outcomes, Social and Mental. Evaluating their sustainability across these dimensions provided a more holistic view of the capabilities driving the outcomes.

To implement this hybrid model, we worked collaboratively to tailor the metrics to their specific needs. We also included ideas related to sustainability and resilience during disruption. We agreed to regular reviews of the outcomes so we could adjust course as needed. While new to Enterprise Agility, they appreciated retaining their legacy frameworks during the transition.

Finally, I always remind other change consultants that we must meet organizations where they are. Every company’s landscape is unique. We can build bespoke bridges with flexibility and creativity to guide organizations into a more responsive and sustainable future.

By blending familiar and new, we can pave an accessible path forward.
