Defining Friction in Signup Flows

First things first – what exactly is “friction” when it comes to signup UX? As ConversionXL explains, it’s the amount of effort users have to exert to complete the process.

Some quantifiable measures include:

  • Number of steps
  • Fields to fill out
  • Extra activities like email verification or installing code

Frictionless flows remove any obstacles that prevent users from accessing the product UI asap. Friction-based flows intentionally introduce hurdles to qualify leads or collect more data upfront.

When Should You Introduce Friction in Your Signup Flow?

As a rule of thumb, a friction-based approach makes sense when:

  • Your product is too complex to demonstrate value easily
  • You want to qualify leads to identify serious users
  • Your pricing targets the higher end of the market

For example, consider FullStory’s signup experience. Their session replay software requires installing JavaScript code before users gain value.

After entering email and password, users answer questions about their persona and use cases. This extra friction provides data to personalize their experience.

Users then go through email verification and code installation. While it's a lengthy process, it results in higher activation once they access the UI. The hurdles also deter spam signups.

When Does a Frictionless Signup Flow Make More Sense?

On the flip side, you’ll likely want a smoother, frictionless signup flow if:

  • Your product is intuitive enough to demonstrate value instantly
  • You want maximum conversions from the lower end of the market
  • No complex technical setup is required

Airtable offers an excellent example here. Their workflow platform has a remarkably fast path to the UI with minimal fields and zero verification or configuration.

Their interface immediately communicates the value prop on its own, spurring users to complete activation after signup. Lower friction leads to more signups, although likely more spam accounts as well.

Striking the Right Balance for Your Product

At the end of the day, there's no universally superior approach here. The ideal strategy depends entirely on your product and target users.

Whether you minimize or intentionally introduce friction, the priority should be guiding users to complete meaningful actions post-signup. Crafting an exceptional first-run experience is crucial as well.
