Craft
When she was 5, my daughter & I used to read picture books together at bedtime. She’s 10 now & we watch Tiktok, YouTube instead. I discover artists, she goes to bed on time, everyone wins.?
Last night, we stumbled upon ‘Fly me to the moon’ (she’s learning Guitar and I wanted to slide in some ad-free inspiration). If you haven’t heard the song, stop everything and listen to it. Here’s the Frank Sinatra's version. Here's a cover by a budding YouTuber - Reneé Dominique.?
Sinatra’s version is not the original but he made it what it is; ten years after the song first came into existence. Full credit to the legend. Most of you’d agree though, that Reneé’s version is more melodious.
Every time I come across an indie singer, or a painter who paints with red wine or a photographer who uses an iPhone to create perspective photos; I’m overwhelmed by their love for craft. I wonder about their process - their means and ends.
These TikTokers and YouTubers are combining traditional and modern means to render and distribute their beautiful creations. We are in the midst of an explosion in indie art. The Internet is no longer just about funny cat videos. That’s progress.
At work, sometimes, just sometimes, I see a presentation or a slide or a worksheet or a note or an email or I hear a well articulated case or argument. In my world, that’s craft. I long for it every day. It’s rare but when I see it, I stop and wonder.?
What’s craft in your world?
