The?Grand Old Party?is immersed in a?deep internal controversy, marked by the influence that?Donald Trump?continues to have on the agenda of American conservatism. Neither on the parliamentary work, nor on the political agenda, do the Republican leaders seem to agree.

Recently, Republican Representative?Liz Cheney?– daughter of former Vice President, Dick Cheney – published an article in?The Washington Post, claiming that Trump convinced the Republicans to abandon the principles of the Constitution, making reference to the?assault on the Capitol?and the?allegations of electoral fraud?that marked his departure from power.

Cheney and her Republican colleague,?Adam Kinzinger, are part of the investigation that the US House of Representatives is carrying out into this event. It’s a role that has caused both representatives to be?censured and sanctioned by the Republican National Committee. This action has once again revealed the deep cracks that still exist within the Republican Party. For example, Senator and leader of the Republicans in the Upper House,?Mitch?McConnell, severely criticized this measure, thus initiating a series of exchanges and accusations, which seem to erode more and more the political cohesion of the party and the link with its electoral base.

Why is it important?

On?8?November?of?this year, US citizens are called to the polls to?elect the new composition of Congress. A poll conducted by CNN earlier this month estimated that almost 6 out of 10 citizens do not approve of?President Biden's?performance.?The poll averages put his?approval rating at just 41.7%.

In this sense,?Republicans?have the opportunity to achieve a victory that would allow them to?retake control of the Senate,?limit the Biden Administration's ability to act?and set themselves on course for the?2024 presidential election. However, if the internal cracks persist and the party fails to shed Trump's heavy legacy once and for all, their chances of victory will be severely limited.
