Cracking Open Easter: A Time to Refresh Your Strategy (And Why It Matters)

Cracking Open Easter: A Time to Refresh Your Strategy (And Why It Matters)

As some of us hop along into Easter holidays now we are 20% of the way through the year, and some of you may have ‘year-ends’, it's the perfect time for a bit of strategic spring cleaning. But before we dive into rehashing our plans and visions, I've got a special treat that might just change the way you think about strategy and communication.

Your Team, Leadership Strategy?

Now you may be in a situation where your strategy is really ‘pinned down’ as you’ve spent days in meetings honing it, refining it. Or it’s an outline and now it’s time to put that into action. I’ve had experience of both ways, and everything in between in my commercial career.?

Juggling the day job, and thinking forward can be a challenge so I help teams and organisations come together this time of year to plan, and understand:

  • Is this still the right strategy?
  • What impact does the internal landscape and external world have?
  • What could be the blockers, and hurdles that get in the way?
  • What resources do we need?
  • What does success specifically look like in a way that management understands, and values
  • What is our people strategy, succession plan, and development needs to get us here?
  • How do we communicate this, and build cohesion and engagement internally??

When you review these questions - then you sense check your strategy. My strategy sessions provide this clarity and planning, over a few hours. Investing in this now will avoid spinning the wheels later on!

But how do you communicate your strategy?

A Personal Insight into Communication's Role in Strategy

You see, amidst the hustle of strategy sessions and the endless pursuit of success, there’s a crucial element that can sometimes slip through the cracks—communication. It’s the glue that holds our plans together, the compass that guides our teams, and frankly, the one area where a lot of us can unknowingly stumble.

My Video Confession

I've taken a deep dive into this very topic in a video I personally recorded, titled “The Cost of Poor Communication.” In it, I share insights, experiences, and the real impact that communication, or the lack thereof, can have on our strategies and overall success. It’s not just another lecture—it’s a journey through the highs and lows of communication in the business world, shared from my heart to yours. I invite you to give it a watch. Here’s the link to the video – think of it as a key ingredient in our recipe for a successful strategy.

Why This Easter Is the Time to Hatch Communication Excellence

As we use this Easter break for some well-deserved R&R, let's also make it a turning point for how we approach communication within our strategies. Here’s why tuning up our communication game is non-negotiable:

Clarity Leads the Way: Clear communication can illuminate the path for your team, turning complex strategies into actionable steps.

Alignment Is Key: When everyone's on the same page, moving forward becomes a synchronised effort, not a tug of war.

Engagement Soars: A team that understands the 'why' behind their 'what' is a team that’s engaged, motivated, and ready to conquer.

Communications Planning: Ensure your teams, and leadership are aware of your successes, and you build awareness and cohesion through communications programming internally, perhaps external (eg studies show employees feel more engaged when they connect with leadership via LinkedIn, as they can participate more on the platform)

Sarah Jones (Leadership and Team Coaching) thank you for a valuable and important post. Communication as you rightly say, is a key element of effective #leadership. It is a two way street. There is no monopoly of wisdom based on our position, job title or role. I have found that many leaders put upon themselves the sole responsibility for developing the business strategy. It’s both unfair on themselves and ignores the importance of engaging the team at an early stage to consider the issues facing the organisation. This process of authentic communication produces a well- formed strategy that is also far more engaging for the team than adopting a top down approach. Thank you again for raising such an important topic at an opportune time. ??
