?? I have had the honor to interview great guests on the podcast, and in this blog post, I am summarizing my enlightening discussion with Prof. Charles Hillman. As you might know, Professor Hillman is quite renowned for his research that unearths the correlation between physical activity and cognitive health. So let's dive in and see what nuggets of wisdom we can find!
?? Our primary focus revolved around understanding the complex relationship between physical activity and cognitive function. Hillman emphasized the importance of a balanced view and avoiding binary thinking. Every aspect of human activity – whether it's sedentary behavior, light physical activity, or vigorous exercise – all play unique roles in cognitive health.
?? "We mustn't pit light activity against vigorous exercise. It's not one or the other, it's both, and then some."
? Hillman underscored the significance of timing. Just like in a symphony, not only the instruments matter, but when they play is crucial too. In our daily activity profiles, the timing of our physical activities has considerable implications on our cognitive health.
?? In his research, Professor Hillman examined the environmental aspects of physical activity too. Urban design and how it impacts our behavior can play a pivotal role in our cognitive health.
?? Collaboration was another point of our discussion. The professor made it clear that he loves to collaborate, but what excites him is the idea of someone bringing something new to the table – whether it's a new imaging technique or a different physical activity mode. After all, science works best when we work together, right?

?? Professor Hillman also gave valuable advice for early career researchers. Grant writing, he mentioned, is a key skill to master. It's a craft that requires patience, persistence, and an understanding of the structure of successful grants.

?? "Stick with it, iterate and try to get better. Just like being an athlete or a good student, these things come easy to a few people, but for the majority, we have to work at it."

1 年still have to listen to the episode but it's sounds promising. As biohacker and creator of ThinkFit (https://www.thinkfit.app/) I've been studying for quite some time the relation between physical activity, exercise and brain function. Interesting findings are, for instance, linked to the BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21081796/. One of the struggles today is to properly add physical movement through the entire day, with a limited impact on the day-by-day activities such as studying or work. My app is actually setting up a framework to integrate physical movement with productivity and mindfulness, for improved personal energy management. Glad to support your work and research on this field and happy to connect with Prof. Charles Hillman. ??
