Cracking the Code: Leveraging Emojis for Enhanced Marketing Communication and Deeper Message Impact

Cracking the Code: Leveraging Emojis for Enhanced Marketing Communication and Deeper Message Impact

With emojis introduced in the late 1990s, the world's expression has skyrocketed beyond words. ???? Now embraced by 92 percent of internet users, as reported by Unicode, and with approximately seven million emojis exchanged every minute, according to USA Today, they've become inseparable from digital communication. For digital marketers, they are a potent asset. In this guide, we'll delve into their effectiveness and provide insights on seamlessly integrating emojis into your digital marketing strategy.

What Are Emojis?

"Emoji" originates from Japanese, a fusion of 絵 (e), meaning "picture," and 文字 (moji), meaning "character." Each "picture character" possesses a distinct Unicode code point, akin to a letter, enabling universal comprehension. For instance, U+1F600 signifies the "Grinning Face" ?? emoji.

This universality facilitates seamless transmission of expressions—sending a smile from an iPhone to an Android device results in a similar smile. Similarly, content can transition from word processing to content management systems and across various devices, ensuring uniform interpretation of the embedded picture characters. ??

Furthermore, it's noteworthy that the plural form of "emoji" can be either "emoji" or "emojis," with the latter being more widely accepted, as per Grammarly.

A Brief History of Emojis

In the late 1990s, two Japanese telecommunications companies pioneered variations of emojis, as detailed by Discover Magazine. SoftBank, then operating as J-Phone, debuted the initial phone equipped with 90 pre-installed emojis in 1997. Meanwhile, Shigetaka Kurita at NTT DoCoMo, though releasing his versions two years later, is often credited as the pioneer due to his colorful emojis, a departure from J-Phone's monochromatic images. Kurita's objective was to simplify communication within a 250-character limit and reduce data consumption, leading to the development of 176 images aimed at facilitating information sharing, which subsequently surged in popularity, sparking the widespread adoption of emojis across Japan.

However, the absence of standardized norms posed a challenge. Each company operated independently, resulting in inconsistent emoji visibility for recipients. Wired reports that in 2007, a Google team petitioned the Unicode Consortium, responsible for maintaining text standards, to recognize emojis. Subsequently, Apple engineers proposed the inclusion of 625 new emoji characters into the Unicode Standard in 2009, a request granted in 2010. The official unveiling of an emoji keyboard in Apple iOS occurred in 2011, followed by Android two years later.

Emojipedia reports that individuals can now petition the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee for the adoption of new emojis, resulting in a list of over 3,600 emojis in the Unicode Standard. Embraced by pop culture, the "Face with Tears of Joy" emoji ?? was even honored as the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year in 2015, the organization reports. Moreover, in 2023, Shigetaka Kurita, recognized as the "Father of Emoji," received the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award and delivered the first-ever five-emoji speech.

Emojis ?? vs. Emoticons :)

According to MoMA, Emojis exhibit several similarities with their predecessors, including emoticons. Shigetaka Kurita drew inspiration from manga, Zapf Dingbats (reminiscent of the Wingdings font), and widely used emoticons, leading to this unsurprising connection. However, while emoticons are essentially "emote" and "icons," constructed from a sequence of characters to convey emotion, emojis primarily consist of pictographs, often appearing in vibrant colors.

Benefits of Using Emojis in Digital Marketing

There are lots of benefits to including emojis in your digital marketing strategy.

Speak Like Your Audience

Mirroring the language of your audience enhances the resonance of your message. With emojis being ubiquitous in online communication, utilized by nearly the entire online population and exchanged in billions daily, incorporating emojis allows you to mirror the communication style of your audience effectively.

Humanize Your Communication

According to research published in Computers in Human Behavior, while brands may occasionally appear robotic or impersonal, the inclusion of positive emojis enhances the sender's perceived warmth.

Reinforce and Strengthen Emotions

Research indicates that while positive emojis coupled with positive messages heighten perceived warmth, negative emojis amplify perceived negativity when paired with negative messages.

Increase Message Comprehension Speed

Aligning emojis with the sentiment of a message enhances processing speed and comprehension, facilitating quicker understanding of brand messages. Leveraging emojis in this manner can help ensure that individuals grasp and potentially retain your brand messages more rapidly. Moreover, emojis prove especially potent in influencing split-second decisions regarding the consumption of marketing materials, such as when recipients open an email or read a text message.

Build Your Brand

Consistent use of specific emojis can strengthen brand identity and enhance recall. Additionally, emojis serve as a tool to showcase your brand's unique personality.

Boost Engagement and Conversions

Numerous case studies demonstrate that incorporating emojis into your marketing content can significantly enhance interaction and prompt action. For example:

  • Tweets experience a 25 percent increase in engagement with the inclusion of emojis, according to WordStream.
  • Facebook posts witness a 33 percent surge in shares and a 57 percent rise in interactions.
  • Push notifications observe an 85 percent boost in open rates and a nine percent increase in conversions, as reported by HubSpot.
  • Paid ads may experience a remarkable 241 percent increase in conversions, according to Ad Espresso.
  • Email campaigns featuring emojis in the subject line exhibit a higher clickthrough rate (CTR), as indicated by data from Search Engine Journal.

Choosing Your Emojis

Prior to integrating emojis into your digital marketing endeavors, it's crucial to deliberate on which emojis to employ, their interpretations, and potential implications of their usage. It's important to recognize that emojis can carry varied meanings for different demographic groups, and there are no universally acknowledged definitions or usages for them. Additionally, the significance of emojis may evolve over time. Hence, exercising discernment in aligning emojis with your brand and audience is paramount.

Use Popular Emojis with Clear Meaning

Your safest choices typically lie with the most popular emojis, as they are more likely to convey your intended message accurately. Let's explore a few examples:

  • ?? Face with Tears of Joy: Signifies something extremely amusing, often leading to uncontrollable laughter.
  • ?? Red Heart: Represents love.
  • ?? Rolling on the Floor Laughing: Indicates hysterical laughter.
  • ?? Thumbs Up: Conveys approval.
  • ?? Loudly Crying Face: Reflects intense emotion, usually sadness, but can also denote relief, laughter, or joy.
  • ?? Smiling Face with Hearts: Expresses love, friendship, or adoration.
  • ?? Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes: Represents falling in love or evokes a sentiment akin to "aww..."
  • ?? Smiling Face with Smiling Eyes: Portrays a warm or humble smile.
  • ?? Rocket: Symbolizes progress or anticipation of significant changes.
  • ?? Flexed Biceps: Indicates success or overcoming a struggle.
  • ?? Bullseye: Represents reaching a goal or hitting a target.
  • ?? Butterfly: Symbolizes change, transformation, or beauty.
  • ?? Person Cartwheeling: Conveys joy or excitement.

Experiment with Top Emojis to Boost Engagement

HubSpot suggests that specific emojis can enhance engagement. While these interpretations are subjective and may not align with every brand's image, you can experiment with them if you believe they suit your context:

  • ?? Person Gesturing OK: Conveys agreement or assurance.
  • ?? Cherries: Symbolizes a prize or indulgence. (Note: This emoji can have alternative meanings, so consider the context carefully.)
  • ?? Tropical Fish: Evokes images of tropical locales or aquatic life.
  • ??Woman Dancing: Represents dancing or conveys excitement and confidence.
  • ??? Sun Behind Small Cloud: Can signify weather conditions or symbolize solutions.

Try the Best-Performing Emojis for Clickthrough

Similarly, specific emojis are linked with higher click-through rates (CTRs). However, like their engagement-focused counterparts mentioned earlier, interpretations aren't universally agreed upon. It's essential to ensure their suitability before incorporating them into your content:

  • ?? Octopus: Symbolizes cleverness, adaptability, or affection.
  • ?? Horse Face: Typically represents a horse, but may occasionally imply playful behavior or "horsing around."
  • ?? Jeans: Signifies comfort or casual attire.
  • ?? Cherries: Represents a prize or indulgence. (Note: Context is crucial, as this emoji can carry alternative meanings.)
  • ?? Locomotive: Generally denotes train travel, but can also symbolize moving forward with determination.

Select Brand-Building Emojis

If a particular emoji aligns well with your brand identity, you might opt to incorporate it consistently across your communications. For instance, McDonald’s frequently utilizes the French fries ?? emoji, while Spirit Airlines naturally integrates the airplane ?? emoji.

Conversely, Taco Bell desired a taco emoji that was absent. Consequently, it initiated a significant PR and marketing campaign to petition for its creation. Thanks to Taco Bell's efforts, we now have the taco emoji ?? at our disposal.

Be Careful When Using Confusing or Often Misused Emojis

Occasionally, an emoji that seems appropriate in a professional setting may carry multiple meanings or be misinterpreted. Here are a few examples you might want to steer clear of for this reason:

  • ?? Dizzy: While some interpret the stars as a space theme, this emoji actually signifies feeling dizzy or disoriented.
  • ?? Hug: Resembling jazz hands, this emoji may inadvertently convey excitement instead of a hug, leading to potential confusion.
  • ?? Information Desk: Often mistaken for sarcasm or sass, this emoji can cause misinterpretation.
  • ?? Bowing: While bowing signifies respect in Japan, it's perceived as disinterest by many Westerners.
  • ?? Folded Hands: In the East, this emoji denotes greetings or farewells, but in the West, it's commonly associated with prayer, begging, or even a high-five.
  • ?? Face with Steam from Nose: Initially intended to express triumph, this emoji is now frequently interpreted as anger or frustration, or even as a reference to smoking or vaping.

Tips for Making the Most of Emojis in Your Digital Marketing

By now, you should have a firm understanding of emojis. Let's delve into strategic ways to incorporate them into your digital marketing strategies.

Don’t Expect Emojis to Carry Your Message

Consider emojis as the finishing touch, not the main element. Would your message still be coherent without the emojis? If not, refine your content so it can stand alone. Then, reintegrate emojis to enhance its impact.

Be Mindful of Your Audience

Allow your audience, particularly your personas, to shape your emoji choices and dictate their strategic utilization.

Emoji Meanings

The emojis Rolling on the Floor Laughing ??, Loudly Crying Face ??, and Skull ?? may appear distinct, but they can convey similar meanings. For instance, while individuals aged 30 and above might use the Rolling on the Floor Laughing emoji to signify laughter until tears, those under 30 may opt for the Loudly Crying Face for the same sentiment. Conversely, members of Gen Z and Generation Alpha are more inclined to select the Skull emoji to express intense laughter.

Likewise, individuals over 30 are prone to interpret a thumbs-up emoji literally, while those under 30 might perceive it as a passive-aggressive gesture or as a signal to conclude the conversation.

When choosing emojis, it's essential to be mindful of these subtleties and aim to employ ones that align with your audience's usage patterns.

Diversity

While most marketers don't purposefully exclude demographics from their campaigns, it can inadvertently occur through habitual use of emojis that offer limited representation. To mitigate unintentional bias, consider incorporating neutral emojis like yellow smileys or gender-neutral figures. Alternatively, develop a strategy to ensure more inclusive representation in your emoji selection.

Try Different Platforms

Emojis find utility across a wide array of digital marketing channels, including:

  • Social media
  • Email
  • SMS
  • Push notifications
  • Chat platforms
  • Paid advertisements
  • And various other digital communication avenues

Experiment with Different Concepts

Emojis offer versatility in usage. For example, you can:

  • Engage social media followers by prompting them to answer questions or vote using emojis.
  • Experiment with placing emojis at the beginning of a message, rather than in the middle or at the end.

Challenge your audience with puzzles to solve.

  • By experimenting with these approaches in a manner that aligns with your brand identity, you can keep your content dynamic and discover what resonates most with your audience.

Use Emojis in Moderation

Avoid overwhelming your messages with emojis, particularly in email communications. Excessive use can render messages difficult to comprehend, potentially perceived as bothersome, and might even trigger spam filters.

A/B Test

Conduct thorough testing on various elements such as the incorporation, placement, and types of emojis to gather concrete data on your audience's preferences. Use this information to continually refine and optimize your strategies over time.

Have Designated Approved Emojis

Given the often rapid nature of emoji selection and the challenges it presents, it can be beneficial to pre-establish a list of emojis for your team to utilize.

Keep it Positive

Although occasional use of negative emojis can demonstrate empathy toward your audience's frustrations, it's generally advisable to prioritize positive ones. Remember, the emotion conveyed in the message reflects onto the sender; therefore, consistently incorporating positive and warm messages can enhance your brand's approachability.

Make it Work for Your Brand and Get Creative

Taco Bell's advocacy for a taco emoji isn't the sole instance of brands venturing into unconventional territory. Dominos, for instance, initiated a campaign enabling customers to order pizza simply by texting the pizza emoji. In another case, a UK optician devised a "spot the emoji" campaign to prompt people to assess their vision. Even the White House explored innovative avenues with the White House Millennials report. If you're enthusiastic about a fresh or distinctive concept, don't hesitate to give it a try!

Consider How Your Emoji Looks on Different Devices

Although emojis have a relatively standardized appearance, they can vary across different devices and platforms. As you begin incorporating emojis, it can be beneficial to consult Unicode's comprehensive emoji list to ensure your intended images display accurately across various platforms.

Evaluate Your Mix

Occasionally, the interpretation of an emoji changes significantly when combined with another. For instance, the cartwheel emoji ?? signifies excitement, but when paired with a hole ???, it implies looming disaster. To prevent such misunderstandings, carefully proofread your messages and consider having someone else review them before publication.

To Emoji or Not to Emoji

Emojis may not always align with every brand or scenario, and in some cases, they could adversely affect your outcomes. Consider this: while emojis can enhance your email marketing efforts, their impact varies. For instance, Business Wire reports that one brand witnessed an eight percent increase in inbox placement and a one percent rise in open rates by including a wrench emoji in the subject line around Father’s Day. Conversely, adding the lips emoji around Valentine’s Day boosted opens by four percent in another campaign, but including the champagne glasses emoji at New Year’s led to a decrease in opens and inbox placement.

Similar findings were noted in Search Engine Land's test: while emojis improved click-through rates (CTRs), they experienced a surge in spam reports when using the newspaper emoji in their newsletter subject line.

In essence, emojis' effects can differ, and your emoji selection and placement matter. What proves effective for one brand might not yield the same results for another. Experimentation and diligent tracking of results are key to determining what works best for your business.
