Cracking Charity Chat. Ep. 13. Demystifying Social Investment with Nick Temple, CEO of SIB

It’s episode 13 and I’ve been chatting with Nick Temple, CEO at Social Investment Business (SIB). Nick is social investment sector through and through, having worked at the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Social Enterprise UK and now SIB. We cover what social investment is, how it’s changed since 2002 when SIB was established, the financial and non-financial support SIB provides, impact measurement and diversity in the social investment sector.

The areas that I really enjoyed hearing about were:

• The power dynamic between investors and investees. The steps that SIB is taking to address this, which includes their Customer Panel, which meets quarterly to explore how the organisation, its systems and processes could be developed to improve the investor-investee relationship. Nick has also written a blog on this topic.
• We chat about SIB’s impact framework, which is being built into all programmes and funds and looks across six areas in relation to building the resilience of organisations (as opposed to focusing solely on specific outcomes). Nick is really honest about where SIB is at with impact measurement and notes that their first Impact Report will be out in September/October 2019, so do look out for it.
• Diversity in the social investment sector. We cover what the sector as a whole is doing (e.g. Nick sits of the social investment sector’s Diversity Forum), as well as the steps that SIB is taking towards a more equal, diverse and inclusive organisation, both internally and through its funding - for example, its Diverse Ambitions fund.

Finally, Nick’s inspiration is Nicholas Albury, who was a key figure in establishing the Republic of Frestonia – anyone interested in social action will love the story.
