Mastering PTE: Insights from Priya Kumra

By Priya Kumra, Director – ELT and Operations

As someone who has taught PTE and IELTS for years, I know how intimidating the PTE exam can feel initially. It’s not just about your English skills—it’s about understanding the test, preparing smartly, and staying calm under pressure. I’ve worked with many students who started out nervous but went on to achieve their dream scores, and I want to share some of the tips that have worked for them.

What Makes PTE Unique?

PTE is a fully computerised test that evaluates Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. Its AI-driven scoring ensures fairness, and results come quickly—often within 48 hours. But the format can be tricky if you’re unprepared.

My Approach to PTE Preparation

When I work with students, I focus on three main areas:

  1. Understanding the Test : The first step is to get comfortable with each task—like Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, or Summarize Spoken Text. We break them down and practice until they feel second nature.
  2. Building Skills Gradually : Many students worry about pronunciation or essay structure. I provide simple techniques, like templates for writing and tips to improve clarity in speaking, that make a big difference.
  3. Consistent Practice with Feedback : Regular practice tests help you get used to the test environment. After each one, we review what worked and where you can improve. It’s all about steady progress.

A Personal Note

One of my students once struggled with Read Aloud—she’d lose confidence when the computer flagged errors. Together, we practiced bite-sized phrases, worked on her pace, and focused on clear pronunciation. By test day, she was speaking confidently and hit her target score.

Final Thoughts

PTE can feel challenging, but with the right guidance, it’s entirely achievable. Remember, it’s not just about passing an exam—it’s about growing your skills and confidence. Stay consistent in your practise and keep calm.

You’ve got this!
