Covid19 “Learnings and Lessons”
I went to an all-boys preparatory boarding school, many years ago. People still believe it’s the best in the country. Everything there was sterile, routine, structured, we didn’t need to think or were told what to do or not do, where to go or not go – kind of life we all are living now in the age of a global pandemic. Do this, not that, go out, but not really…common theme is sense of confinement.
Over the past few months, I have been reflecting on how life could be different after COVID-19. And in some ways how similar it is to my boarding school years.
My Reflections:
1. Authenticity: companies won’t be able to pretend. You’re either digital or you’re not, trustworthy or not, well managed or not. E-commerce is/will be everywhere with new bells and whistles, creating a bigger threat for unprepared companies. Supply chains strategies will be more local and domestic driven. Education via e-leaning platforms will also be transformed by real companies delivering high standards in blended digital platforms. The same is valid for people, the way we re-skill ourselves and adjust to new business contexts. Continuous learning is the new retirement paradigm.
2. Value: slow down to speed up…the way we connect, where we connect, how much we connect, and to some degree why we connect… relevance of simple things, will become more important, as it should be and was. We will be motivated by genuine interest, will care more and be more meaningfully engaged. Empathy will overcome individual mindset.
3. Economics: a paradigm shift is happening, more meaningful experiences, emotional connections, living in the window of moment to outcome-focused environments. We will travel differently, we will embrace nature differently, we will re-balance work-life, we will not waste time with meaningless experiences.
Essentially our ability to learn, un-learn, re-learn will become sharper and more acute.
