COVID MAY BE HERE TO STAY, SO LET’S MAKE SURE WE CAN RETURN TO WORK SAFELY!

Here we are nearly a year on, the focus in workplaces and other multi-occupant spaces and those open to the public, must remain on limiting transmission to prevent the spread of Coronavirus to un-vaccinated people. It is critical that workplaces maintain good levels of ventilation to help reduce the risk of airborne transmission.

We know that small particles are expelled from an infected individual while exhaling or talking and can remain airborne indefinitely. Stagnant air in an office could be riddled with viruses.

Some air conditioning systems can remove particles from the air, but the virus and bacteria particles must travel to where the air conditioning system is first for it to be removed from the air. Some systems maintain CO2 levels, regulate temperatures and remove smells but most do not disinfect the air.

We have all seen offices at the start of this pandemic carry out deep cleans and employ companies to fog all spaces which will in the short term kill of any bacteria & viruses. The thing is, a one off deep clean and fogging will not keep a room free of viruses. Fogging does not stay airborne and only disinfects surfaces it lands on leaving the air untreated. This only protects a room against viruses & bacteria until the next person walks into that room and then immediately the integrity of the room is compromised.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also confirmed that fogging systems do not reduce the spread of the virus. This is because transmission is usually through droplets or contact, so the effectiveness of these systems is likely to be minimal. Where a person who is infected with COVID-19 has entered a disinfected room as they start speaking, coughing or sneezing they can still spread the virus. These types of disinfectants can also potentially be harmful and cause health effects including respiratory and eye irritation.

So, what’s the answer???

Going forward, when staff and other building users are allowed back into the workplace, employers and building managers need to make sure several things are in place.

1.   Is there enough ventilation?

2.   Are air conditioning systems clean, working properly and being maintained regularly?

3.   Are office spaces and public areas deep cleaned regularly?

All these things are now standard items that should be addressed by employers and building managers, but now is the time to give staff the confidence and reassurance to return to the workplace in an environment which is a safe place to work. Staff need to know that the air they breathe is clean, bacteria and virus free and provides an increased wellbeing for buildings occupants.

This is where BYD Solutions Ltd systems are an invaluable addition to the safe return to the workplace.
