The COVID “butterfly effect” that no one noticed
A slight change could’ve lowered COVID death rate by 17%.
A May 2023 study reviewed daily COVID-19 infection and death rates during the first year of the pandemic in the US. The researchers then compared these rates to patient reviews for corresponding geographic areas.
Online healthcare reviews enabled patients to rate their experiences on a five-star scale.
Areas with higher patient satisfaction ratings performed significantly better during the pandemic.
But the less obvious finding was the quantitative effect of patient satisfaction.
According to the 2023 study models, had there been a 0.3-star increase in the ratings healthcare providers nationwide, the United States may have experienced:
Ron Harman King, an author of the study and CEO of Vanguard Communications stated:
“Other studies have consistently shown that hundreds of thousands of online patient reviews can in the aggregate act as surprisingly reliable indicators of healthcare quality and outcomes”

“Patients fare much better both physically and emotionally when doctors actively listen, adapt to patient input and prioritize patient satisfaction.”
The findings of this study, as many others did, highlight the power of patient-centricity in improving healthcare outcomes.
Unfortunately, we can’t get the lost ones back. But the question still calls for an answer: how much can we prevent by turning our sight to patient experience? How much more efficient would our healthcare be if we put the patient at the center?
