Covid-19 & IT Supply Chain
I'm getting consistent inquiries about mitigating the supply chain risk to IT associated with Covid-19. As smaller customers must line up behind mega cloud providers such as AWS, Google, and Azure, what can customers do to ensure you have the capacity for both expected and unexpected growth?
My recommendation is the same as any other recommendation during a crisis. Make as few changes as necessary to resolve the problem. Changing technology is relatively easy vs. training people and processes.
Extend your infrastructure out to the public cloud to mitigate the supply chain risk. Re-use your existing operational processes as much as possible to avoid training an already stressed IT staff.
Ensure your contract with your Public Cloud provider accounts for the necessary minimum footprint you will need. I've heard accounts of Azure not being able to meet the demand for pay as you go customers in some regions.
It's why we at the CTO Advisor recommend a balanced approach to your IT infrastructure planning. A combination of private data centers and resources in the public cloud helps to enable operational agility.
