If COVID-19 Shuts Down Trucking Companies

Today, we were informed that at least one terminal at a very popular transportation company is planning to shut down for a few weeks. The terminals manage the inbound and outbound loads that go on trucks; without operating terminals, nothing gets picked up or delivered. In other words, pallets of essential products get stuck, and we are unable to buy food and household supplies at stores and online.

Brian Bourke, SEKO’s chief growth officer, recently said, “The delivery experience is going to be different for the foreseeable future.”

Most people have been focusing on the economic impact of the virus on transportation companies. More importantly, now is the time to focus on reliability and functionality. As consumers, we all need to make sure trucking industry people are well-positioned to keep on truckin'.

A healthy trucking industry isn't only about healthy financial statements. Right now, it's vitally important that the PEOPLE in the industry stay healthy. If major trucking companies can't keep people healthy in their terminals and on the trucks, we'll all have bigger problems. Consumers often forget that there is an army of people working hard behind the scenes in warehousing and trucking that make it all happen.

The photo is of Charles Stallings, a driver on the front-lines. He stated that he's taking every precaution to keep himself and other people safe, but he's aware he needs to keep working: "If I don't work, you don't eat." Thanks to Charles and others!

Fortunately, our team and systems include thousands of great trucking companies, so there's always a way to ship. Thanks to the team for keeping everything moving.

Feel free to share other information about trucking closures that might impact deliveries to grocery stores or consumers' homes. And, take the time to thank people who are delivering (from a distance please; respect their health).

If the trucking and logistics infrastructure is severely impacted, it would make sense to deploy some of the National Guard as temporary drivers and workers. No? Hopefully, the standard precautions will be effective enough.

Heard from the head of small independent that does the low-road cross-country that his issue at moment is drivers trying to get routed home. Dan Sanker makes emotional sense, but as noted disruptive to say the least.
