COVID-19 impact on workforce
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a short-term reversal of the supply-demand imbalance that has been prevalent across the healthcare sector in recent years. This year nurse supply has outstripped demand for the first sustained period whilst hospital capacity has concentrated on intensive care.
Despite this short-term reversal in trend, the underlying challenges have not gone away.
Key themes that remain:
· The requirement for international recruitment
· Streamlining workforce regulatory process
· Creating a UK pipeline of nurses
The response to the pandemic has seen some considerable changes in approach to workforce which highlight some key opportunities:
· Effective adoption of new workforce models
· Rapid technology enablement
· Establishing key, strategic partnerships to deliver value

4 年Correct Adam, hospitals have had periods since March where large parts of usual services have had to be cancelled including elective surgery. Impact on workforce has been huge disruption with reductions in demand other than for staff providing care in response to Covid such as in intensive care and respiratory. Thankfully sevices are now progressively returning.

4 年As a newbie student of healthcare systems I admit to not totally "getting" the cause of the new surplus of nursing candidates. Is this purely down to the suspension of a large number of non-critical interventions due to Covid, or is there more at play? (good article - thanks!)

4 年Thanks for posting Mark. Health and social care have previously been ‘safe-havens’ during periods of high unemployment - it was how I ‘stumbled’ into healthcare in the 1980’s. It will be interesting to see how quickly local and National workforce plans adapt to this increase in potential recruits.... one for a later article maybe?
