COVID-19 & Indigenous Communities in Peru ??
I had the privilege of spending this past October - January in Peru, and came back on March 10th because the mountains were calling me home. Shortly after arriving in Cusco, the President announced the quarantine and essentially shut the whole country down.
Peru does not have medical infrastructure able to support a widespread pandemic, so they acted swiftly and strictly to minimize the spread of the virus and set some of the strictest prevention protocols in South America. Everyone is to essentially stay inside their home at all times (except going to the market or ATM near your house*), there is a 6pm curfew, and all other shops/restaurants/etc have been shut down.
Many communities rely on tourism and the sale of artisana to feed their families, and as a result, many families are going without food.
- 2 children have died of starvation in the high-mountain region of Pacchanta.
- The wisdom-keepers of Q'eros (descendants of the Incas) are running low on food.
- Many Shipibo families are without the means to feed themselves
- & many more indigenous communities are being decimated.
I've partnered with my neighbor, a local here, to raise money for bringing supplies and provisions to some of the indigenous communities here that are struggling.
100% of collected funds will be divided between the Q'eros, Shipibo, and Pacchanta.
We will be sending money to the Q'eros/Shipibos, and are working on getting a government permit to take supplies to Pacchanta and physically drop them off.
Even if you're only able to donate $1, please do. Every penny counts, and this is a matter of saving the lives of some of the greatest carriers of ancient wisdom on this planet.
I will definitely post a followup as this mission progresses, and photos from when we are able to take supplies to Pacchanta.
