COVID-19 and FEAR

COVID-19 and FEAR

As I read the news, it is difficult to understand the depth and breadth of COVID-19’s impact.  Yes, there are shelter-in-place orders in far too many places to list, and now the President is recommending social distancing through April 30.  People are without work, beginning to feel hopeless, and in the upcoming weeks I fear that desperation will become a reality for far too many Americans.

Recently, I retired after 30 years in public service.  In my various positions I have witnessed horrific events and unbelievable devastation.  I have not, however, seen something that has moved so fast, affected so many, with no clear end in sight.

My experience has demonstrated that after a week or two without social interaction, deep depression can begin to develop in far too many.  Depression is certainly an issue that affects much of the American population each day.  Just imagine the pain and suffering our family and friends are dealing with at this time of uncertainty.  For those with history of depression, anxiety, or alcoholism a pandemic can significantly increase their fears, spawn panic attacks, cause further avoidance and a host of other life-altering symptoms.

Social distancing is going to help us overcome this pandemic, but it can also exclude some of our most vulnerable.  It is our responsibility as friends, co-workers, and Americans to take a moment and reach out to our friends, families, and acquaintances to ensure they are safe, healthy, and handling this crisis.  You will be helping them withstand the onslaught of negativity, while helping you cope with the stress as well.

Could you also offer encouragement to those on the front lines battling this pandemic?  Those medical workers, grocers, first responder and others.  They need to be uplifted through your words of encouragement and prayers.

Your kindness will certainly have an impact that will offer encouragement and possibly save a life.

For me, my balance comes from service to others and my faith.  Faith in a God who said He will hear our prayers.  The God who will be with us in good and bad times.  The same God who sent His son to die for our sins.  With faith, I will not fear.  If I fear, I am full of anxiety and not holding on to the promises He has given us in His Word.  Life might not be easy, but God is at work even during a pandemic.

God Bless
