Trust me. I get it. The pandemic has economically rocked the world of so many of the people we care about. Entire industries are gone. Layoffs have been staggering. Many small businesses have been crushed.

It’s even scarier knowing that experts see the second wave of the pandemic only heightening those problems. The government programs we thought might help us are slow to appear. And many of us, and our businesses, barely benefitted from the first round of public programs.

It’s become pretty clear that waiting for things to change is no longer a viable strategy. Standing by, hoping, will not ensure that you, or your business, will flourish in the months and years ahead. 

Not everyone is getting crushed economically by the coronavirus. If you’re like most, you are probably trying to determine if it’s motivating or frustrating that some companies and some of your peers are actually doing very well during this health crisis.

Many of those with a well planned digital strategy and an effective online presence are actually kicking butt despite lockdowns, curfews and other restrictions. That makes perfect sense, when you think about logically. Aren’t we all spending more time in front of our screens today? And aren’t our buying patterns changing substantially professionally and personally?

Yet, very few of us are working hard enough, or smart enough, at improving our online positioning, as individuals or small businesses. As a strategist and a content creator, I know that firsthand.

In a sentence, too many of us pay way too little attention to how we look to others online. We either present ourselves, poorly, inaccurately or not at all. How can that make sense at a time when everyone finds themselves on their phone or tablet or computer endless hours every day? 

Too few people understand the incredible power of LinkedIn. To the surprise of many, 80% of all B to B transactions driven by social media result from LinkedIn. The amount of employment opportunities posted on LinkedIn are exploding. Those networking through LinkedIn are experiencing tremendous success.

Ignorance of those facts probably explain why so many of us put so little effort into LinkedIn.  Too many of us on LinkedIn have a headline and profile that is outdated or poorly constructed. (Or worse yet, are not even on LinkedIn.) Less than 1 in 10 on LinkedIn of us have made the effort to connect with at least 100 others. Most never post interesting and original content on LinkedIn.

Why do so many of us overuse introductory emails instead of taking advantage of easy-to-use and highly effective LinkedIn messaging? Statistics confirm that is a mistake too many of us are making. People respond to LinkedIn messages.

Why do so many of us as business owners apologize for the current state of our website? Your website is often the first place, or the last, a potential customer visits yet most of us are not satisfied with its content, look or ease of use. And for good reason. Incredibly, many websites today still are not mobile-friendly. Huh?

Many of us have businesses that could be substantially enhanced by engaging in or improving upon e-commerce. Some are scared by it. Others are satisfied trying to figure it out...with little success. If you are not a Shopify, Facebook or Instagram, help does exist. 

If you are a holdout and think the importance of your online presence will wane when the pandemic ends, I don’t like your odds. None of us are decreasing our time spent online. Even your grandfather.
