COVID-19 is a circuit breaker

At a time when boundaries between work and home have all but disappeared, we find ourselves at a point in history where there is no playbook.

As a business owner navigating through this time, we are seeing the old business world being challenged and we are quickly learning that COVID-19 is a circuit breaker. Alas, we have found a new status quo.

Here is what I have learnt about business:

  • The playing field has levelled - the conversations between clients & suppliers have become more holistic, rather than the traditional services being provided from one to the other.
  • Real talk is more important than ever - Employers have opened up to their employees about their financial situation and teams are being more supportive than ever before. We have seen this is in action, right here on @linkedin.
  • Everything is negotiable - contracts and service lists are all well & good until a pandemic punches you in the face. We need to adapt quickly and at the end of the day, business is all about the underlying relationship and the trust you have in each other.

Here are some recommendations we have shared with our clients:

  • Brand awareness has never been more important. Doing something is better than nothing.
  • Protect the core - client retention and existing business should always be a major focus. As new business is harder to come by, go back to basics and over service those customers who helped you get to where you are today.
  • Be enterprising - we all have a pipeline of initiatives that we put on the back burner when it's BAU (business as usual). If you’ve got some spare time, build that website, update that credentials deck because everyone is a start-up now, so make sure you are ready to slingshot out once the restrictions are lifted.

Lastly, enjoy the downtime - we all complain that we are too busy so take this time to rest up and spend time with loved ones.
