COVID-19 is Causing Bias-Are you helping or hurting?

With all the talk about COVID-19 and protecting our communities, there is a lot of false information being shared. Recently, I became aware of the concerning marginalization that is occurring in the community around Coronavirus (COVID-19). People of Asian descent are being discriminated against as fear of virus transmission increases. Internet rumors and hoaxes are perpetrating this hysteria.
As healthcare providers, we should be aware of the stigma related COVID-19 for people of Asian descent. To overcome this we must be exemplars of inclusivity at work and in our communities. We need to offer social support to those who may be targeted by the stigma. Communicate the facts to others that being Asian does not increase your chance of contracting or spreading the virus.
You can help halt the impact. If you see anyone at work or in your community, sharing inaccurate information about the spread of the virus or targeting a specific group of people, speak up. Not saying something, or continuing to spread false information, only perpetuates racism. As healthcare leaders, we need to have zero tolerance for discrimination or harassment.
Also, know that as a result of being targeted by rumors in the community, some people may feel conspicuous about routine screening processes or personal protective equipment. It is a best practice to always explain what we are doing and why. As people enter your healthcare facility, tell them why we are asking about their travel and illness symptoms. Always introduce yourself and your role in the patient’s care. In general, explaining what we are doing and why during every healthcare interaction is beneficial. It helps patients understand their care, reduces their anxiety, and reassures them of our competence as professionals.
COVID-19 is not going away soon. We can all do our part to help make sure that the facts about the disease are spread rather than the rumors. That every person is treated with humanity, despite fear.
