California ended the Covid-19 State of Emergency, and now non-emergency standards are the law for workplaces. While this is a step towards normalcy, employers must remain vigilant and keep up with the regulations. Here’s what California employers need to know.
Stay Up to Date with Regulations
Employers must stay on top of the latest Covid-19 regulations to ensure that they’re in compliance with the law. The regulations are subject to change, so it’s essential to keep an eye out for updates and make any necessary adjustments. Regularly check the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Cal/OSHA websites for updates.
Check Your County Covid-19 Community Levels
Employers must keep an eye on the Covid-19 community levels in their county to know what to do to keep their workplace safe. The CDPH has set up a website where you can find your county case level: https://covid19.ca.gov/safely-reopening/#what-to-do-now. If your county is experiencing a surge in cases, you may need to adjust your workplace protocols.
Update Your Covid-19 Prevention Plan
Employers must refresh or update their Covid-19 Prevention Plan and/or incorporate it into their Illness and Injury Prevention Plan. The CDPH has provided an updated CPP version from CalOSHA, which can help employers develop their plans.

Know and Follow the CDPH Isolation and Quarantine Guidance
Employers must know and follow the CDPH Isolation and Quarantine Guidance to keep their employees safe if there’s a Covid-19 case in the workplace. You can find the guidance here: https://caconnected.cdph.ca.gov/agent/?id=24. It’s essential to have a plan in place in case an employee tests positive for Covid-19.
Have a Supply of Face Masks or Sanitation Tools
Employers must have a supply of face masks or sanitation tools on hand. If ordered to do so by the CDPH, employers must supply face masks. If the Covid-19 Community Level is medium or high, facilities must maintain or reinstate universal masking requirements for all staff and residents, regardless of whether there are any outbreaks within the facility.
Remind Your Employees to Stay Home When Sick and Get Vaccinated
Employers must remind their employees to stay home when sick and to stay up to date with Covid-19 and/or flu vaccines. This will help keep the workplace safe and prevent the spread of illness.
As California ends the Covid-19 State of Emergency, it’s important for employers to remain vigilant and keep up with the latest regulations.
