1 Peter 4:8 (NIV) | Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
The context of today’s verse from 1 Peter 4:8 deals with living in the end times. Peter wants Jesus’ followers to love each other with a reminder that we are to love as God loves us (John 13:34). And then, the next thought is to offer hospitality to others without grumbling. Hospitality in the Bible refers not just to entertaining family or friends but showing love to strangers. All of a sudden this takes on a whole new meaning to loving each other deeply since love covers a multitude of sins. We aren’t to forgive and love only the people we like and love, but everyone! Peter learned this from Jesus when the Lord taught, “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them” (Luke 6:27, NIV).” So, the love we express helps to cover the sins of self and others, just like Jesus’ love covers us in our sin.
