The Cover Letter Debate: Essential or Extra Work?

The Cover Letter Debate: Essential or Extra Work?

At Proximity Recruitment, we're always curious about the latest trends and preferences in the job market, especially when it comes to the hiring process. Recently, we conducted a poll on our LinkedIn page asking our network about their views on the importance of cover letters in job applications. The results have provided some interesting insights into how both job seekers and hiring professionals feel about this traditional part of the application process.

The Results: A Mixed Bag

Our poll asked one simple question: How do you feel about writing cover letters for job applications?

The responses were as follows:

  • 5% said cover letters are "essential for standing out"
  • 23% thought they were "helpful but not necessary"
  • 50% found them "time-consuming and tedious"
  • 23% preferred to "skip them"

The Importance of Cover Letters

While only 5% of respondents consider cover letters "essential for standing out," it's important to remember that this small group may include hiring managers and industry professionals who view a well-crafted cover letter as a reflection of a candidate’s effort and professionalism. In the world of digital marketing and eCommerce, where creativity and communication skills are key, a strong cover letter can be a chance for a candidate to showcase their personality and explain why they are the perfect fit for the role.

However, this sentiment is not universal.

Time-Consuming but Helpful

Interestingly, 23% of our respondents found cover letters helpful, but not an absolute necessity. In digital marketing and eCommerce roles, hiring managers are often more focused on tangible skills—such as SEO knowledge, data analysis, and proficiency in platforms like Google Analytics or Shopify. A concise, well-organised resume may often speak louder than a lengthy cover letter.

Yet, for candidates in roles where communication and cultural fit are crucial, such as content creation or social media management, a brief and tailored cover letter could provide added context and differentiate them from other applicants.

The Case Against Cover Letters

A substantial 50% of our respondents expressed frustration with the cover letter process, calling it "time-consuming and tedious." In an industry that moves fast, this reaction is understandable. With constant changes in digital marketing strategies, eCommerce platforms, and consumer behaviors, job seekers are often more focused on refining their portfolios or updating their LinkedIn profiles rather than writing a traditional cover letter.

Moreover, many employers are adopting a more streamlined hiring process, preferring to get straight to the core qualifications and experience rather than reading through what can feel like a repetitive narrative.

The Verdict: Are Cover Letters Outdated?

As we can see from the poll, opinions on cover letters in the digital marketing and eCommerce sectors are divided. While some hiring professionals still value them as part of the application process, others find them to be a cumbersome addition that may not add significant value, especially in fast-paced industries where time is of the essence.

So, what does this mean for both job seekers and employers?

For job seekers: It’s best to evaluate each job application individually. If the job description calls for a personalised cover letter or if the employer explicitly requests one, then it’s a good idea to comply. However, if the employer’s focus is on skillsets and proven results, a polished resume and portfolio might be all you need.

For employers: It may be worth revisiting your application process. Consider if requiring a cover letter truly adds value to your hiring process or if it could be replaced by other means of assessing candidates, such as portfolio reviews or skill-based assessments.

We specialise in connecting top digital marketing and eCommerce talent with the best employers. Whether you’re a candidate looking for the next opportunity or a company seeking top talent, we help streamline the hiring process to focus on what truly matters: skills, experience, and cultural fit.
