At the core of exceptional leadership lies courage and integrity. Without these qualities, leaders slip into mediocrity and jeopardize their potential for positive impact. Courageous leaders consistently demonstrate integrity, humility, transparency and resilience. By inspiring and empowering those around them, they foster meaningful change, remaining true to their integrity and grounded in their core values.?

Whilst being a leader often involves navigating through uncertainty with confidence and making decisions that might not be popular but are necessary, it does not require leaders to sacrifice empathy or care. Even in the midst of uncertainty and powerful resistance, courageous leaders maintain kindness. They confront difficult truths and challenging conversations with transparency and kindness. ?

Courageous leaders understand that growth can be challenging for everyone, including themselves. They embrace vulnerability and have a growth mindset, viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn and do better, even if not every employee under their guidance perceives it that way for themselves. Courage grows when mistakes are treated as opportunities.?


Practical Tips for Developing Courage as a Leader

1. Embrace Vulnerability

  • Create an inclusive and psychologically safe environment for everyone
  • Ask for help when help is needed
  • Be open about your uncertainties and challenges, and share the lessons you've learned along the way

2. Live Your Values?

  • Uphold your integrity by staying true to your word and principles consistently

3. Start Small

  • Practice courage in smaller, everyday moments. This builds confidence for larger courageous challenges

4. Build a Support System

  • Surround yourself with the right people, those who support, encourage and importantly, challenge you. Engaging with diverse viewpoints provide valuable perspectives when making decisions

5. Seek Feedback

  • Ask for honest input from trusted colleagues to identify blind spots and areas for growth

6. Prepare for Resistance

  • Not everyone will agree or understand the decisions courageous leaders make, and that’s okay. Anticipate resistance but also celebrate the small victories?


Courageous leaders are continuous learners, not just ‘knowers’, and decision-makers. They embrace growth, take ownership of their mistakes, and exhibit emotional resilience by staying calm under pressure. By applying these strategies and adopting kindness as a core leadership principle, leaders can strengthen their ability to lead with courage.?
