Courage versus Confidence

Courage versus Confidence

"It was male-dominated. It just wasn't for me."

Life in the ER in the last 2 years had been especially grueling. Front line workers, like her, got hit the hardest with both stress and long hours. She started introducing meditation to her department. A few people at first. Soon, the groups got larger. This was a part of the hospital that was doing important work but the demands of the pandemic were also overwhelming. Meditation was a relief. An oasis in the day as they were saving lives. Her work was so well received that a white paper was generated on "the merits of meditation in the ER."

She is a physician's assistant in the emergency room of one of the biggest teaching hospitals in the country. She knew that public speaking was an important skill, especially with a fledgling side business in the yoga and meditation space. But it always got pushed to the back burner. She checked out Toastmasters, a non profit that teaches better communication and public speaking, and concluded that it wasn't for her. Disenchanted by the number of men versus women in the groups, she enrolled in my Masterclass instead. She was drawn to this Masterclass for women.

She wrote me last week to share some special news. She would be presenting the white paper. Normally she would be freaking out about speaking to a group. But since she had taken my Masterclass, she felt much more at ease.

Yesterday, in a podcast interview, David asked me, "What are you most proud of?" I shared this story. Women come to my Masterclass seeking confidence. But, what they leave with----is courage.

See confidence is a way of 'doing.' Courage is a way of 'being.'

The next cohort of my public speaking masterclass kicks off February 16th. Sign up here.

My name is Joya Dass. I made my living as a television news anchor for 20 years. Very specifically, I covered the financial markets from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. It was what I wanted to do since I was 4 years old. But I forged that career on my own, and had to build the network to get here. Nobody teaches this stuff in school. So I created a leadership platform to teach best practices around self leadership and networking. I drive programming by interviewing CEO's and thought leaders for the community I have built.
