The Courage to be Uncertain

The greatest enemy of certainty is courage, the courage to admit, "I don't know." This may sound like an excuse in a world where decisive, concise statements are rewarded, but it is the beginning of proper understanding. When you embrace uncertainty, you allow yourself to explore, challenge, and grow.
The Stoics, champions of resilience since the days of the ancient Romans, understood this centuries ago. Marcus Aurelius advised,
"You always have the option of having no opinion. There is never any reason to get upset or to worry."
In other words, it's okay to keep your conclusions open and leave room for the possibility that you could be wrong.
Critical thinking doesn't require you to reject certainties altogether. It requires you to earn them. True self-confidence comes not from knowing everything but from considering the alternatives, wrestling with the questions, and carefully choosing your beliefs.
