The Courage to Step Out: A Personal Journey to Inspire Your Next Move

“Resilience is built and refined through persistent action. The reality is that, the life you want isn’t just going to show up; you have to pursue it." Aguy.

Sometimes, the path to our greatest achievements feels daunting, even impossible.

If you’re reading this and wrestling with self-doubt or feeling stuck in your comfort zone, I want you to know: you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. But here’s the truth—growth often lies on the other side of discomfort, and only those who are willing to endure will transform their lives, the world and others.

Fifteen years ago, I embarked on a journey in coaching, speaking, and personal development. While I loved empowering others to achieve their goals, I felt a stirring inside—a desire to deepen my skills and provide even greater value to the high-performance professionals I worked with. But taking that next step wasn’t easy.

Returning to school after earning a Master’s degree at Southern Arkansas University and teaching for over a decade felt like a monumental challenge. Still, I am also a husband, father and mentor to my two teenage sons. How do I split myself to make those desires my reality.

I will say with all confidence that I am one hundred percent certain that I am not alone when I say this: It is difficult to step out when so much is on your shoulders, but the alternative is true...you will always keep what you have if you do nothing; you will always remain where you are if your stand still; you will always remain at the same level if you refused to climb upward to the next rung on the ladder of your potential.

I couldn’t ignore the evidence I’d uncovered through years of research: high performers often face unique struggles—imposter syndrome, burnout, and the mental hurdles of resilience. Addressing these issues required more than experience; it demanded deeper understanding, greater appreciation of the human struggle to uncover their greatest quest to find self and purpose beyond the daily hustles of survival.

One thing I learned along the way and it is that, the people you are called to service will always inspire you to remain unsettled and persistently wrestle with mediocrity. Their demand for excellence creates a pull on you for nutients; as result, you are more compelled to seek out greater opportunities for your personal growth so you can serve them better. I have coached medical doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and educational leaders, and this has been a driving force in my quest for more.

I had to reach for more in order to serve them at their highest levels, while pushing them to dig deeper to find true meaning beyond their own norms.

I already had an extensive background in somatic wellness and Kinesiological concepts. But that was still not enough. Professionals were still losing momentum, experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue. I remembered giving a keynote on emotional intelligence and how to overcome compassion fatigue in leaders, and after the session I guided a room of participants in some basic weighted exercises.

They were exhausted after only a few minutes. Mind you, this was a two day professional development workshop for dental surgeons, dental hygienist and admin staff from several multidisciplinary clinics. The light bulb came on while on a plane to do a keynote in PEI.

It was at this time I realized that their was something hindering their performance; something beyond the physical, but more mental.

So, I stepped into the unknown and pursued another Master’s degree, this time in Counselling and Psychology. It wasn’t just academic growth; it was personal transformation. Night after night, I balanced studying, speaking engagements, coaching sessions, and writing. The process was gruelling, but every challenge strengthened my resolve. In 2023, I earned my MACP, but my journey didn’t stop there.

Becoming a Registered Psychotherapist meant taking another step outside my comfort zone: preparing for the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) exam. The journey wasn’t linear, nor was it easy. But with perseverance, I achieved this milestone in 2024. Today, I’m proud to call myself a licensed mental health practitioner in Ontario, Canada. And beyond that, I have added more clarity and value my high performance clients.

Why am I sharing this?

Because I see you. I know who you are. I understand your frustrations, even those who hide behind powerful positions. We are all humans in need of each other. I see the professional who’s overwhelmed by imposter syndrome. I see the entrepreneur who's afraid to risk failure. I see the person with untapped potential, held back by fear of the unknown. The journey to step out of your comfort zone is challenging, but it’s also transformational. If I can do it, so can you.

You might be facing a tough decision or contemplating a significant change, like furthering your development, improving your worklife, or embarking on a new career path. Yes, it will be hard. But remember, resilience is built through persistent action; plus, the life you want isn’t just going to show up; you have to pursue it.
