In basic terms, Perfectionism is the desire to be a perfect person. Considered a personality trait, a perfectionist is a person who yearns to be flawless in everything they do. They expect their path toward any goal to be direct, smooth, and free of obstacles.
In her famous book on writing,?Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott describes Perfectionism as the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people.
People may use the term healthy Perfectionism to describe or justify perfectionistic behavior. However, Brene Brown, a writer and researcher at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, distinguishes between Perfectionism and healthy behavior. She says, "Perfectionism is different from striving to be your best. Perfection is not about healthy achievement and growth." Instead, she explains that many people use Perfectionism as a shield to protect against the pain of blame, judgment, or shame.
There's a big difference between striving for our personal best and Perfectionism. Sriving for our personal best involves not only a challenge to our integrity and character but also the occasional failure and making of mistakes, all of which make us human.
Healthy striving is self-focus. How can I improve? Perfectionism is other-focused. What will they think?
Unfortunately, many people who strive for Perfectionism often succumb to a downside of this trait, setting up standards that are incredibly high and almost impossible to achieve. In addition, this ideal way of thinking can set a person up for failure, disappointment, and negative self-evaluations.
Perfectionists are the unknowing masters of the art of procrastination. They may receive a task and then think about how perfectly they want to complete it. But unfortunately, they have set a high standard that attempting to do the job becomes so overwhelming that they choose to work on other, less meaningful, mundane tasks.
