Courage and Fear WITWA 2024

Courage and Fear WITWA 2024

Wow what an amazing session before lunch and a workshop with Rhys Paddick and @Emma Gibbens

?

Ever felt:

Too Loud

Too Bossy

Too Emotional

Going to Fail

Will I Fail

You will Fail.

?

It’s quite amazing some of the things that we make up in our head, which aren’t truths. This constant doubt can create Fear and Fear of Failure.

This in turn can create #Peoplepleasers (a blessing and a curse). Can not achieve our goals 100% of the time, no matter how hard you try and all you do is try. I combat this by acknowledging that I can’t do everything, acknowledging what I want to do, acknowledging what others want me to do, then deciding myself what is the best thing to happen for my family and me.

Th true fear hear is that of offending people. All you end up doing is trying to please people, we don’t want to offend people. This then stops people from acting, form doing and from making a difference. Scared of saying the wrong thing, doing the wrong thing and upsetting people.

The fears we all have are mostly created in our minds. 99% of the time you are going to be ok, all the time. Someone will always find a reason to be offended, or to be upset that is the 1%.

Pillars of offense. The fear of what If? This can paralyze us. So, it is important that the conversation is expressed and shared with vulnerably to acknowledge and move on.

We acknowledge that we cannot please everyone. Accept that we can either act or not act. “To be or not be” in the words of William Shakespeare. What if the thing that makes us act, make a difference and changes the world?

I decided whilst I wasn’t in the room I would build up the courage to share my fears with you all. So, my fears I shared on X and now on LinkedIn.

My fears are that:

1) my ideas are too crazy

2) my writing the wrong thing

3) my words might me muddled

4) speaking at the right time (I still put my hand up)

5) my ideas will be taken

?

Emma and Rhys

So, to overcome these fears, I will:

1) Accept my ideas are crazy, crazy different, crazy good.

2) Write anyway because my thoughts are valid.

3) Yes, my words get muddled, because I think in pictures, the more I write the better I get, my words might me muddled but my thoughts are valid.

( Addition: Writing still scares me, as a child kept behind school (a long time ago) to red line my English written work. Being told you can not structure sentences in certain ways, to attending night school after university. All caused by moving from Wales to England, and being taught in different methods and different languages. Who knew I have learnt recently that the written word evolves, those of us that think differently event new ways of writing, poetry, songs, drawings and creative word. Fascinating writing what I feel. Fascinating what people find easy others Fear. Fear is often created by others and planted as seeds in our heads.)

4) My manners are part of me, and I will accept that I will never know when to speak at the right time (I will still put my hand up) but I will also let people know why I do this, so they can seek to understand more about #Neurodiversity

5) I will remember that everyone has ideas, and some people have them at the same time, this is why we need the “Prior art and IP”. The difference is execution, my ideas may get taken without permission, (That’s not ok) however I will make them happen, that will be the difference. Some ideas like are ok to borrow and share Regenerative and Off grid Camping are meant to be shared so that others can benefit from our amazing country. Some ideas are meant to be shared for the greater good for our society.

My learning is that your heart will know when it is time. "The first records of the word courage come from the 1200s." (“What is the ancient Greek word for courage? – ProfoundQa”)?It comes from the Old French corage, from cuer, meaning “heart”?(this ultimately derives from the Latin cor, meaning “heart”) Cou (Heart) and age (Time) I did not know this until emma informed us. Facinating. I now look at courage differently.

What a beautiful workshop to attend remotely online. Thank you, Rhys Paddick and Emma Gibbens. You made me think.

That thing that makes us act is “Courage” and one of the values which are looked for in the WITWA Awards. It’s had a fear, acknowledging it’s there, like a big elephant, but you know what you must step in anyway and give it some gusto. Good luck to all the nominees tomorrow night!!!!!
