UK Cloud Computing Dominance Under Scrutiny: Amazon and Microsoft Face Competition Probe

Ofcom, the UK's media watchdog, has announced a competition probe into the cloud computing market due to concerns about its dominance by Amazon and Microsoft. These two giants make up 70-80% of the sector in the UK, while Google, the closest competitor, holds only 5-10%.

Ofcom's worries stem from the lack of competition, making it difficult for businesses to switch providers. The regulator has referred the sector to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) for investigation. Amazon and Microsoft have expressed their willingness to cooperate with the CMA, although Amazon has contested Ofcom's concerns, claiming they are based on a "fundamental misconception" of the sector. The CMA's investigation is expected to conclude by April 2025, and it has the power to enforce changes in business practices or block purchases if necessary. The watchdog is particularly concerned about obstacles to switching providers, including fees charged for moving data to rivals, which could be limiting competition in the cloud computing market.
