Guest: Dr. Tim Clark

My dear friend and colleague Dr. Tim Clark, CEO of LeaderFactor, and author of "The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety"shows us how it takes courage to view Covid differently and in general how to provide the space to allow others to speak up and stand out through providing psychological safety.

In this episode CB and Tim discuss:

???? #psychologicalSafety

???? #courage

???? #toxicculture

???? #robertputnam

01:38 CB: Dr. Tim Clark he is the world expert in creating psychological safety and he has a Book* that talks about the steps that you need to follow to create psychological safety and we know how important that is.

02:08 Tim: you need to create safe spaces for people to speak and I appreciate the opportunity to talk about psychological safety and organizational culture and what people want and need especially since all of this has been rocked lately right with a pandemic.

02:59 Tim: but I want to start with this point that a crisis has the ability to liquefy the status quo well so I want you to think about that think about what we're up against when we try to change cultures. Cultures become what we call fossilized they become hard we get very entrenched in the way we think and the way and the things that we do the way we behave and then when we say we need to change our culture we need to change our we need to transform it we're up against this fossilized calcified status quo think about how hard that is the benefit of the pandemic is that it has thrust us into this fluid state of disequilibrium it has liquefied the status quo so if you ever wanted to change the culture change the environment change the climate now's the time you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shift the prevailing norms on your team or in your organization now is the time to do that

?04:23 Tim: I don't think people realize the opportunity that they have in their hands some people have been hibernating during the crisis and what I would suggest is that you not do that that you accelerate not hibernate because that's the opportunity that we have.

CB:?Hold on you started us off with a heavy concept … give it to us again.

Tim: Sure. So, a crisis has the ability to liquefy the status quo

CB: Okay so based upon that you mentioned that we're in this pandemic but the fact is that we are in five pandemics right now does that create muddy waters?

?05:14 Tim: in this liquefication process, no, it just liquefies it even more …

?06:11 CB: does that mean it makes it easier for us to approach psychological safety. Does it mean we're all on the same playing field? What does it mean?

Tim: ?it means that we've been shaken up, we've been jarred we have been moved out of our comfort zone we've been pushed out of it unwillingly involuntarily that's where we all are and so now the opportunity is when you have this fluid state the opportunity is are you going to do culture by design or by default.

There's always a choice are you going to do it intentionally deliberately by design or are you going to just do what you do and let it happen and then whatever you get, you get! That's how people approach culture and organizations, by designer.

By default, it's always a choice. And what I'm suggesting is that now that we have had a global reset we have an opportunity to do it again to push to hit refresh and do it again by designing cultural patterns, cultural assets are things that we can design if we want to.

07:32 CB: How do you design a culture when in fact the culture has been embedded in various systems for years and years and years how do you then take it apart and redesign it and say okay done.

For the entire interview and to hear Tim's response visit:

Guest: Timothy R. Clark - Episode 13 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cb-bowman-live-challenges-of-the-c-suite/id1540197344?i=1000547035793

*The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety: Defining the Path to Inclusion and Innovation

Summary:

Dr. Clark is a master of yin and yang which is a Chinese philosophical concept that describes how obviously opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Tim is able to do this with psychological safety, the pandemic, social justice, millennials, and everyday life. Hang on tight for a great ride during this interview and after as you share it with your friends and your family for a great dinner discussion.

“There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who do not. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.”
