Couple of new features for M365 protection that are rolling out

I think these couple of new features are quite cool and useful when protecting data against different threat scenarios.

One other change in past couple of weeks worth to mention is the Automatic labeling capacity rise from 25000 items per day to 100000 items per day. That makes many impossible data protection scenarios possible or at least plausible :D

Dynamic watermarking

Feature id 400717 - Rolling out on November

"Dynamic watermarking is a new sensitivity label setting that overlays watermark text containing the consuming user’s information on content in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint."

Basically this is the feature to use for highly confidential data that you want to protect against taking pictures and screenshots for example.

Feature is new and requires the latest Office App versions or Office online to work and can only be applied to encrypted documents with assign now permissions.

Here is how it looks

Label inheritance from container setting

Feature id 421192 - Roll-out start January 2025

"This enables admins to inherit document library label from the container label of a group/site/team. New and edited documents within the default document library will be labeled automatically. If the SharePoint admin had already configured a default document library labeling, this setting will not override it."

Basically this makes things simple if organization has a lot of unlabeled content. Just start classifying containers and content will follow. If organization has poorly configured or overused labels that don't protect enough, they are also blocking automatic assignment of labels. Labels are considered always human over machine, so no integrated automation will replace already set labels.

There are ways to work around this like file policies, but no easy way out.
