Overview
On 30 August, a newly formed Committee for Transition and the Restoration of Institution (CTRI) made up of military personnel comprising members of the presidential guard, the military, announced on a live broadcast that it had taken over power and nullified the just concluded general elections. Gunfire was reportedly heard in Libreville, the capital city.
The Elections
This development comes after the 2023 general election results were announced declaring ousted President Ali Bongo Odimba, who has been in power since 2009, as the winner. According to the Gabonese Elections Center (CGE), Ali Bongo garnered 64.27% of the total votes. The main opponent, Albert Ondo Ossa, who won 30.77% of the votes, also accused the ruling party of election fraud.
Current Situation
Presently, Gabon's institutions including the government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council and the Gabonese Elections Centre have been dissolved while the country's borders have been closed. Internet access, which was cut off, was reportedly restored after the announcement. Street celebrations have broken out in parts of Libreville, somewhat indicating acceptance from the population. Ali Bongo has reportedly been placed under house arrest and the whereabouts of other top government leaders remain unknown.
Forecast/Outlook
In the coming hours, there’s a likelihood of flight cancellations to and from Gabon due to the border closures. Regional blocs may respond by imposing sanctions. At the moment, there is no imminent risk to businesses, however, minor to medium disruptions cannot be ruled out if the situation escalates.
