Countdown to Retirement: Are You Ready for Your Last Day?

Retirement isn't the finish line—it's the starting line of a brand-new chapter. After spending decades navigating a career, overcoming challenges, and achieving professional milestones, it’s time to ask yourself: Are you truly ready for what’s next?
When we (Mark and Jody) first retired, we quickly learned that financial preparation alone wasn’t enough. While having money in the bank is crucial, retirement success depends on how well you prepare mentally, emotionally, and socially for this transition. In this article, we’ll share the steps that helped us embrace retirement with confidence and excitement. By taking these steps, you’ll be well on your way to starting your retirement journey on the right foot.
1. Reflect on Your Career Successes
In the beginning, we didn’t take enough time to reflect on our careers. We were too focused on getting to that last day. What we’ve since realized is that reflecting on your career is more than just a feel-good exercise—it’s a necessary part of transitioning into retirement.
Taking time to acknowledge your career successes, the skills you’ve honed, and the relationships you’ve built helps you transition with confidence. By celebrating your accomplishments, you also create a foundation for future growth. Maybe some of the skills you’ve developed could lead to new hobbies, volunteer opportunities, or even part-time work during retirement.
I have found this reflection so helpful that I wrote a book about it. While you don’t need to write a book, journaling or making a list of your career highlights can be a great way to wrap up your working life in a meaningful way.
2. Create a Short-Term Plan for Your First Year
When we first retired, we thought we could just figure it out as we went along. But waking up that first Monday after retirement, we quickly realized we needed a plan. Having a short-term plan for your first year of retirement can make a huge difference.
Think of it like a gap year, where you have some structure but also time to explore and adjust. Set goals for activities that bridge your working life with your new retirement. Maybe you want to take some trips, spend more time with family, or start a hobby. Most importantly, schedule time for rest and relaxation, which is well-deserved after decades of work.
Having a plan ensures your first year is filled with purpose rather than confusion or boredom.
3. Envision Your Ideal Retirement
Without a vision, retirement can feel aimless. We made this mistake early on—thinking retirement was just about relaxing. But the truth is, a fulfilling retirement requires thought and planning. Take the time to imagine what your ideal retirement looks like.
Ask yourself: What do I want to do with this time? Do I want to travel, volunteer, spend more time with family, or pick up a new hobby? Your retirement is an opportunity to live life on your own terms, but it requires a plan. We even recommend creating a vision board to help clarify your goals and keep you focused.
For us, envisioning our retirement meant reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and focusing on our health. Having a clear picture of your retirement helps you live each day with intention and excitement.
4. Develop a Comprehensive Wellness Plan
Your health is your greatest asset in retirement. Early on, we weren’t mindful of this, and we paid the price—too much TV, unhealthy food, and not enough movement. It wasn’t until we put together a comprehensive wellness plan that we started thriving in retirement.
A strong wellness plan should include:

The more you prioritize your health, the more energy and vitality you’ll have to enjoy your retirement. We’ve found that focusing on our wellness has allowed us to be more active, present, and engaged in the things we love. It’s never too early (or too late) to start making your health a priority.
5. Reconnect with Old and New Friends
Social connections are a big part of a fulfilling retirement. One of the most rewarding things we’ve done is reconnect with old friends from our high school days. Those relationships, even after decades of not being in touch, became meaningful again and helped fill our lives with joy and laughter.
But we didn’t stop there—we also made new friends. Whether through social clubs, volunteer groups, or simply meeting people in our community, building new friendships has added a whole new layer to our retirement.
Jody, for example, made wonderful new friends at our home in Marco Island. These friendships, though relatively new, are deeply meaningful and have enriched her retirement. Reconnecting with old friends while also making new ones is essential to living a vibrant and social retirement.
6. Ensure Your Finances Are in Order
We don’t focus much on the financial side of retirement, but it’s impossible to ignore how important financial stability is. Before you retire, make sure your finances are in order.
Review your retirement savings, calculate your expected expenses, and talk to a financial advisor if needed. When your finances are secure, you can focus on enjoying your retirement, without the constant worry of how you’re going to fund it.
7. Consider Volunteering
Volunteering can add purpose and fulfillment to your retirement. Many retirees leave behind not only their jobs but also the sense of purpose that came with working. Volunteering fills that void and allows you to contribute your skills and passions to causes you care about.
We’ve found volunteering to be one of the most rewarding parts of retirement. It’s a way to give back while also meeting new people who share your interests. Whether you’re mentoring, helping a local charity, or volunteering at a community event, this is a great way to keep yourself engaged and active.
