Count Your Life On One Hand
I have traveled through a number of workplaces in the past 30 years, picking up what I think is a fairly useful philosophy of work, and this is it: There are only 5 things in life that really matter. My Boss/Job; The Human Race; My Family; God (or the Universe, or what you choose); Me.
If you can do it without looking at my list, go ahead and rank that list. Then, I'll give you my take.
1) The Universe; This comes first because putting myself ahead of all things is just begging for trouble. Say 'God' if you mean 'God,' but whatever you call it, let it humble you just a little. Even the biggest fish in the pond is still in a pond.
2) Me; Yippee! I'm near the top of the list. The reason I don't "humbly" lower myself further is because I cannot. A person who does not know and value and maintain himself cannot help or serve anyone else.
3) My Family; Before there were governments or corporations or bowling leagues, there were families. They are extensions of my desires for the future. They're also pretty cool people who are always there for me. This category can also include close friends.
4) The Human Race; At this point of the list, someone's going to ask why a Boss or Job isn't higher. Because it's not! If you are planning to work, you are planning to serve. If you are planning to serve, you are not focused on how to take/steal without giving. People matter. People deserve your respect whether you're doing business with them or not. You can also add to this category: the environment, education, health, and more. (It's a great list to work on, and the longer it gets, the more right you are!)
5) Job/Boss; You're last on the list, Sir, Madam, Massive Edifice of Profit. If you are higher, something is wrong. To work is to serve, but to serve one must have one's values straight. To the dinosaur companies who demand ever-shifting hours for low pay, profit at the expense of the customer, and practice just plain selfishness, I say this: Keep going the way you're going. We need the oil! To everyone else: Just imagine what we can accomplish if everyone sets their sights on the next win-win deal.
There's a bit of chutes and ladders in these steps, but you get the idea. Best of success, everyone!
