COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS: LIFE IS A SHORT RIDE.

I ve been blessed to have practiced major criminal defense for 36 years. A lot of colleagues , both government and defense attorneys, and a number of Judges have stated, " man Hurricane you should write a book ".  Really, I ve seen it all. A lot.  Good, fascinating, and the bad. Also, the sad. The tragic. I feel truly blessed. I ve been in recovery eighteen years and get the opportunity to work with and help a lot of people , young gang members, and clients experiencing alcohol and drug problems. I feel so fortunate to also be frequently asked to speak to groups regarding my experience in criminal law and defending . Again this holiday season I am truly humbled and grateful with the blessings I ve received. Folks , practicing law and especially high profile trial law is a stressful business. Our profession is rife with those afflicted with mental illness; including but not limited to depression, alcoholism, and addiction. Only today another very visible Dallas attorney I ve know for years passed away . Sadly, he committed suicide. He took his own life. This is the fourth attorney I ve known in the last two months who has died, all young men- who were struggling with emotional, and psychological issues. Another had sought in patient treatment for depression and addiction in the aftermath of two children passing recently. In no field of law more than criminal defense does one get to see the tragic impact of mental illness and the impact it has on not only the individual but all those close to them. Life is a short trip amigos. Count your blessings. Be grateful. Live life to the fullest for tomorrow is promised to NO one. None. May God bless each and everyone of you during this holiday season.
