South Gloucestershire District Council has to pay £25,000 in compensation for losses arising to a homeowner after the Council refused to give permission to carry out works to a protected tree (protected under a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)). Councils will now have to consider potential financial consequences to the public purse when they make TPOs as damages resulting from them could be a costly exercise for them and not one they could sensibly budget for.
