Could we please rethink Mondays?

“How are you?”

“Duh, it’s Monday…”

How often have you heard or said that phrase on a Monday morning, in a meeting, or on a call? “You know, Monday” – a simple sentence that conveys a universal feeling of dread. It’s common to hear it from anyone, whether a doorman, a shop assistant, an office employee, a politician, or a CEO. This universal expression highlights the negative connotations associated with Mondays.

Sometimes, we dread Monday for specific reasons: a looming project deadline, awaiting exam results or a doctor’s check-up, or an upcoming meeting with a strict boss. Yet, why do we blame Monday?

I’d be lying if I said I’ve never uttered a similar sentiment, but I’ve realized a few important things:

  • My words have power over my feelings and influence how others feel.
  • As a leader, I must set a positive example rather than drag everyone down with me because of one bad Monday.
  • I can choose how to act and react, turning every day into a day of planning new beginnings, setting goals, and making it a positive and meaningful one.

I wondered how our outlook and productivity could change if we approached Monday mornings enthusiastically and optimistically, setting a positive tone for the days ahead. As a communicator (and organizational psychologist), these are my essential tips to help me even on the most hectic and stressful days:

Morning routine: I have established a morning routine that fits my schedule and needs peace and quiet. I wake up early and spend my first hour in silence, enjoying water and coffee, planning the day ahead, and working out.

Start the night before: I prefer to prepare the night before, especially if I have an important day ahead. I fix my work bag, select my clothes, etc. The fewer decisions I must make in the early morning, the better! This way, I keep my focus on the goals, tasks, and projects ahead.

Set clear goals: Every Monday, I map out the most important tasks for the week. Sometimes, I accomplish everything by Tuesday; other times, busy days require postponing tasks to the next week, but this way, I have the big picture.

Break big tasks into smaller steps: For complex tasks like organizing an event, I use detailed planners to map progress and ensure no important sub-tasks are missed. This also frees my mind from remembering every little detail so I can focus on the “now”.

Use positive language: Encouraging language creates a more inspiring atmosphere for me and those around me. Words can shape our emotions, so we must choose them wisely. The messages we convey can uplift our spirits and positively impact our feelings.

I strive to be mindful of nonverbal cues: When we talk about body language, we often think of facial expressions and tone of voice, but it's much more than that. It includes our posture, gestures, and even our clothes and accessories. This entire "package" often communicates more than words. I always choose to smile and be kind, and I dress well, as how I present myself reflects how I feel about my surroundings.
