Could Using Your Product Resale Value Convert More Customers?
For anyone who has every bought baby products will quickly understand, they are expensive and you never need them for very long, however, the second hand market for baby products is just as booming and you're very likely to get a good price for your item once your child has outgrown it, but not everyone knows that when buying the product and paying full price - so what dazzling trick can help buyers overcome the high price hurdle?
Cushion the burden with showing the sell on value
There are so many people selling baby products online, how to stand out in the noise is a difficult challenge. If you are not a manufacturer of a product line, then chances of success will be even lower.
So what can you do to stand out?
Well what about telling the soon to be or current parent what they'll look to make back once they sell on their product in a very buoyant second hand baby market.
A US baby product company called Rebelstork have introduced a 'REV Resale Pricing Tool' that provides a simple calculator tool, that by determining the age and condition can provide the user with a suggested sell on value.
People are so familiar with buying products from Facebook, Ebay or Gumtree that the stigma that used to be attached to buying second hand goods feels totally gone, now its just common sense, to pay less.
If I am spending £500 on a stroller, and I use it for 2 years, look after it well, I might be able to get £250 back for it, meaning, it really only cost me £250.
This figure looks far less daunting that the original figure, all because the ease of selling it on a marketplace after is far easier nowadays that waiting for good weather, getting up at 4am to do a boot sale!

Rebelstork are onto something
Rebelstork are using the ease of the second hand market and the lifting stigma of buying and selling second hand goods and using it to their advantage.
Yes, they are a retailer of many items and no doubt have massive competition, but I am yet to see a brand that have delivered something like Rev.
With the world being more conscious on sustainability, utilising second hands items is also doing something positive for the environment, but the main positive is the potential lower price for the product you are paying, as you know you'll be able to sell this on.
Some fancy AI is used
Ok, so they've boasted that it uses AI and no doubt have invested into creating a database that can work out the potential sell on costs, or at least manually just down prices of popular items to make this work - but that's what they are doing. Going above and beyond to stand out in the noise of thousands of other baby online store brands.
So What's To Swipe & Deploy?
In a world of noise, how can your brand stand out and be different? Will this inspire you to consider something similar in your industry? Is there a good second hand market for your products?
The real takeaway is to look at what Rebelstork are doing and seeing if there is an opportunity in your industry to adapt a calculator for the sell on value of your products. Or simply mind mapping ideas on how your online store can think differently to capture visitor attention.
I am impressed with the initiative and think it's certainly worth sharing. I want to thank Rishi Rawat, the Shopify product page guy for sharing his feedback on the brand in a post he shared, which you can find here

6 个月This is interesting. There is a risk that they will lose sales to the second-hand market if they advertise that the items sell for half price there. I guess they've decided this is more likely to convince their buyers to buy, than drive them away. Based on the parents I know, I wonder whether the people who buy new and buy second-hand are quite distinct customer types and there isn't much movement between those groups.
