Could mentorship help with a clear focus?
Ten years ago we arrived to Seattle from a refugee camp in Kenya. After 13 years of living in a harsh environment infested with malaria, poor education, and sanitation; we are very thankful to start all over. As a new immigrant to the United States, we didn't have the typical $200 in my pocket narrative, we had zero dollars. Being the eldest of the family, I am by tradition required to be a good role model. Not that only, but my parents left me a huge task of rising young amazing sibling after their lives were cut short. Not sure if I have been that leader my parents expected of me without them but I am damn sure that I am determined to not let anyone down. I have dedicated my life to get try to get our family from misery we went through by seizing any opportunities that came or come my way. While I have been here for few months, I have set my eyes on tech giants like Microsoft.
I was determined to enroll in school continue with my studies. That said, I got my GED because I left the refugee camp without completing my last high school exams. I enrolled at Bellevue College to study many things but decided to focus on computer science. When I started everything was difficult for sometimes because I needed to take English course and adjust myself to the new culture.
Long story short, my skills started to take effect in the early 2015. Anyway, along the way, I went to meetups and Starbucks where I met people whom I call mentors. I would always hangout with them and ask questions about the tech industry. I was interested in art of building solutions and the possibilities of starting a company. Amongst the skills I wanted to learn was is leadership and how to master any skills I wanted in short time.
The mentors I met after a long time of self-navigation have helped me see a clear path and I was fortunate to have shape my career today. There are majority of people out their struggling to lend their fast job and I have also noticed that most companies don't use their resources to train beginners. We need to nurture the new generation of innovators,. entrepreneurs doctors, teachers and engineers etc. because your companies need this talents tomorrow, 20 years or 100 years from now.
