A lot of the work in difficult conversations comes down to listening.?
It sounds fairly easy right? But let me tell you why it’s not.
When dealing with conversations of a sensitive nature (especially with close personal relationships) it’s so easy for our emotions to take control of minds - and words.?
Whether we realize it or not - we find ourselves primarily focused on communicating our position or countering an argument from the other side that conflicts with our beliefs or “truths.”
This is natural because most humans want to be heard - and respected.?
Including the person you are speaking with.
This is a hard skill to master - so if you are still grappling with this - that’s ok.?
One trick is to try to step outside of yourself.

Imagine that you are a third party or journalist that is simply there to listen and understand the entire story.?
I’m willing to bet you will see an immediate shift in the conversation - if for no other reason than the fact that the other person will experience the relief and satisfaction of being heard.?
The bonus: what they share can prove to be invaluable to your future relationship.?
