Could digital wellbeing be silently killing your business?

In our fast-paced, digital age, where efficiency seems to be prized above all else, it's easy to fall into the trap of chasing technological solutions without considering the broader implications. We eagerly adopt new software, apps, and platforms, believing they'll revolutionize our workflows and propel our businesses to new heights. And while technology undoubtedly has the power to transform, its unchecked usage can lead to unforeseen consequences.

In March, I had the pleasure of hosting a Lunch & Learn session at the Digital Women ? conference, titled "Could Digital Wellbeing Be Silently Killing Your Business?" Using the cartoon story based on real life experiences, we explored the hidden perils of poor digital experiences—how they can sap our time, drain our energy, and jeopardise our businesses sometimes without us knowing.

It's easy to overlook the broader implications of digital wellbeing, simply thinking about it in terms of screen time. But the truth is, the technology we rely on should enhance—not hinder—our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our businesses. As small business owners, we can suffer from 'shiny objective syndrome', drawn in by the allure of clever marketing and special offers. Often this means we neglect to consider the toll on our mental bandwidth and the customer journey.

Take, for example, the allure of automation. We're often seduced by promises of increased productivity and reduced manual labour. Yet, in our rush to automate every aspect of our operations, we risk losing the personal touch that sets our businesses apart. Customers crave authenticity and connection, and an over reliance on automated systems can leave them feeling disconnected and undervalued.

Then there's the issue of information overload. With a seemingly endless array of digital tools at our disposal, it's all too easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data inundating us each day. From emails and notifications to social media feeds and analytics dashboards, the constant barrage of information can leave us feeling mentally drained and emotionally depleted.

But perhaps the biggest threat to our digital wellbeing is the relentless pursuit of perfection. In our quest for flawless systems and flawless outcomes, we set impossibly high standards for ourselves and our businesses. We fear failure and rejection, so we meticulously polish our digital personas, presenting only the highlight reel while concealing the inevitable flaws and imperfections.

So how can we reclaim our digital wellbeing and ensure our businesses thrive in the digital age? It starts with mindfulness. We must cultivate awareness of our digital habits and their impact on our mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. We must approach technology not as a panacea for all our problems but as a tool to be wielded thoughtfully and intentionally.

Let's pause for a moment to reflect on our own digital practices. Are we using technology to enhance our lives and businesses, or are we allowing it to dictate our every move? Are we fostering genuine connections with our customers, or are we hiding behind automated facades? Are we striving for progress, not perfection, embracing the messy realities of entrepreneurship with grace and resilience?

As we navigate the path creating harmony in a tech-driven world, let's remember that we hold the power to shape our digital experiences. Let's choose technology that empowers rather than enslaves, that connects rather than isolates, and that uplifts rather than diminishes. Together, let's create a digital landscape that fosters wellbeing, creativity, and human connection.

And remembering that what works for us may not work for our customers. Automated call systems and call queueing can be examples. They make our people more efficient, but can leave the customer enraged. (Or is that just me...)
