Could a catamaran be one solution to marine plastic?

Could a catamaran be one solution to marine plastic?

Eleven million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year. At this rate, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. This calls for innovative and sustainable solutions to divert plastics from nature.?

Enter the Circular Explorer.

I’m excited that we’ve launched the Circular Explorer, the first of a kind catamaran fully powered by clean energy. Its mission? To clean up our oceans.?

Putting the circular economy to work, the catamaran has the capacity to recover four tons of plastic waste every day, which it recycles into new applications from products to alternative energy.

The Circular Explorer represents how we put our expertise and passion to preserve our vital ecosystems in a circular way, starting with our ocean. Our economy needs to shift from a linear, “take, make, waste” model to a circular one based on “reduce, reuse and recycle”, where our growth preserves and replenishes our resources rather than depletes them.?

Working alongside our partners at One Earth One Ocean, we will use the Circular Explorer to help raise awareness of the impact of plastic waste while encouraging communities to move to more circular lifestyles by:

  • Education: We will empower students to be changemakers for broad-based impact through awareness building education.?
  • Science: We will continue exploring new solutions with leading marine institutes to push scientific boundaries and advance marine research.?
  • Recycling: We will take recycling action to a new level, using carbon neutral methods to tackle the marine plastic problem.?

The Circular Explorer starts its journey in Hamburg, Germany, where the boat will focus on education and science programs for three months and then be relocated to Manila Bay in the Philippines in 2022. The coastline of the Manila Bay is one of the most severely polluted coastlines in the world, plastic collected on the boat will first be sorted for recycling. Plastic at the end of its lifecycle, unable to be recycled, will be transformed into alternative energy.??

I am very proud that the Circular Explorer has started its journey to raise awareness and take action to #CleanSeas. Everyone has a role to play to preserve our oceans, and as a world leader in recycling, Holcim is determined to use our expertise wherever we can to build progress for people and the planet.

This is so cool. I always wondered what would happen if we start inventing technology to address the plastic problem in our oceans, particularly the garbage patches. If only we can spend as much on plastic pollution, as we do space exploration.
